Protivín combines collections on wildlife and local history with a long educational trail and a protected pond landscape. You can therefore choose different focuses for your trip: explore several museums, discover the city’s historical connections, or make time for a hike or bike ride. Collections spanning wildlife, art and local history

Protivín’s information centre includes a zoological museum with osteological specimens and taxidermy of reptiles, monkeys, rhinoceroses and giraffes. The information centre also houses a permanent exhibition of collages, prolages and chiasmages by the artist Jiří Kolář, who was born in Protivín. The two collections have clearly distinct focuses: one museum draws attention to animal specimens, while the other exhibition showcases an artist’s work. If you would like to include both in your trip, they offer two different ways to explore culture and natural history.

The Památník města Protivína features modern historical exhibitions on the history of Protivín and its surroundings. Topics include, among others, the history of brewing and the railway. Another exhibition, “Exotická příroda,” features dioramas of rainforest, savannah, desert and the depths of the sea. Interactive elements also appeal to younger visitors. This means the same building focuses both on historical topics and on different landscapes and habitats.

More than 1,200 clocks, wristwatches and alarm clocks are on display at Království času. A watchmaking workshop for children gives visitors the opportunity to make items including models of alarm clocks, wristwatches or hand puppets. There is also an outdoor playground in an enclosed garden. Krokodýlí ZOO Protivín offers the educational experience programme “Poznej dokonalý výtvor evoluce – Seznam se s krokodýlem,” which introduces visitors to crocodiles. Check before you arrive whether the programme is offered on your chosen date.

Local history and an annual event

The Church of St. Elizabeth on Protivín’s square was completed in 1662 in the early Baroque style. The brewery is also part of the city’s long history: it was founded in 1598. The history of brewing is also one of the topics covered in the exhibitions at the Památník města Protivína.

Nature and outdoor activities with different time commitments

A group of 13 ponds lies between Protivín and the Písek Mountains. Ten of them are protected as the “Zelendárky” natural monument. This is a distinct nature-focused option alongside the city’s collections. The NS Blanice educational trail offers another way to spend time outdoors: it is 23 kilometres long and suitable for hiking, full-day family outings and cycling.

For family walks, the walking time is 4–5 hours; the cycling time is about 2.5 hours. These timings reflect different time budgets and ways of getting around. In Protivín, you can start the educational trail at the bus stop on the square in front of the museum or outside the railway station. However, the official starting point is in the passageway of the Protivín Museum, where an introductory information board and a map of the trail are displayed.
