Anyone choosing Olešná for its waterside setting will find a place whose layout is shaped by two waterways. The Vltava forms the western boundary of the municipality; the section along the right bank extends from river kilometre 183.4 to 185.5. The small Velký potok flows through the built-up area. Olešná developed in a valley around this stream and on the banks of the Vltava. The watercourse in the village and the Vltava at the municipal boundary can therefore serve as distinct points of reference during a stay.

The Vltava, the Reservoir and Walking Routes

The Vltava and the Orlík Reservoir play a central role in recreation in the area. Existing hiking and cycling routes in the municipality of Olešná run along the reservoir’s banks. The Písecká Smoleč–Strouhy–Podolsko tourist route also passes through the area, connecting visitors with attractive places and natural sights. The Orlík Reservoir in the wider area is particularly popular with people interested in water sports and sailing. Olešná thus offers options for a range of interests: the riverside landscape and paths sit alongside a named tourist route and water sports in the wider area.

One specific landmark is the Skály viewpoint, about one kilometre south of Olešná. From there, you can enjoy views of the Vltava within the Orlík Reservoir. Its approximate distance and the view make this place more clearly identifiable, without equating it with the riverside paths or the route. If you choose what to explore based on landscape, you can include Skály as a viewpoint in its own right.

Bridges on Different Scales

Olešná itself has a listed bridge over the Velký potok. Nearby, the Podolský Bridge crosses the Vltava on the Písek–Tábor road. It was built from 1939 to 1943 and is 510 metres long. The railway bridge near Červená nad Vltavou is another nearby engineering structure: it was built from 1886 to 1889 and is 253 metres long. The two structures can be distinguished by their construction dates and lengths. The railway bridge is older; at 510 metres, the Podolský Bridge is approximately twice as long. The surrounding area thus offers both a listed bridge in the village and two larger bridges, each with its own engineering history.

Churches and Historic Places

Near Chřešťovice, the Church of St John the Baptist stands on the left bank of the Vltava. It dates from the 14th century. In the past, the church could be reached from Olešná by ferry across the Vltava. This crossing is specifically part of the history of visiting the place. Another historic site is Mount Tábor (Burkovák), five kilometres southeast of Olešná. It is considered a Celtic cult site and a burial ground dating from the Bronze Age and Hallstatt period.

Near Olešná, the Church of St Bartholomew brings together architectural history and a changing landscape. It dates from 1190 and was moved above the flood line in 1960 because of the construction of the Orlík Reservoir. The churches therefore each offer a distinct reason to focus on cultural history, without confusing their stories.

Local Amenities and Traditional Events

The municipal development programme for 2021 to 2027 lists sports grounds with courts and a children’s playground at the Skalica sports complex in Olešná. Traditional events in Olešná include burning the witches, raising the Maypole, summer sports days, events for children, fishing events and gatherings of former residents. If a particular event is a deciding factor in your trip, check its date in advance.
