Slabčice offers two distinct cultural points of interest: the Church of St. Joseph on the village square and the archaeological sites at Burkovák, also called hora Tábor. A green-marked hiking route leads from Nemějice to hora Tábor and can be continued as far as Písecká Smoleč. This makes it possible to organise the village setting, prehistory and hiking as separate priorities when planning your trip. If you are looking for a specific building, head to the village square; if you would like to include prehistoric sites and a trail to the hill, head to Nemějice and hora Tábor.
Church of St. Joseph on the village square
The Church of St. Joseph is a prominent landmark on the village square in Slabčice. It was consecrated in 1900 and is an immovable cultural monument listed in the central register of monuments. The consecration provides a specific historical date, while its protected status denotes the building’s lasting status. Its location on the village square places the church within the village setting, while the year of consecration places it in history.
Burkovák and the archaeological sites
Burkovák is regarded as a unique Hallstatt-period cult site of European importance. The hill, also called hora Tábor, was a destination for religious gatherings in the Middle Ages. The stone circle below hora Tábor is near Nemějice, west of and below the hill. It has a diameter of eight metres and consists of a central stone and 16 perimeter stones; four of them mark the cardinal directions. The archaeological cult site and barrow cemetery at Nemějice include 33 barrows. There are two Bronze Age and Hallstatt-period barrow cemeteries in the vicinity of Burkovák. The transition from the individual stone circle to the barrow cemeteries takes you from a specific monument to the broader archaeological landscape.
The periods represented can also help you decide: the Bronze and Hallstatt periods are represented by the prehistoric barrow cemeteries, the religious gatherings date to the Middle Ages, and the church was consecrated in 1900. You can therefore choose to focus on early cultural and burial sites, or give prominence to the village square and its more recent ecclesiastical history.
Hiking trail to hora Tábor
A hiking route description published in 2021 describes the green-marked trail from Nemějice to hora Tábor as short and not difficult. It follows a field track to the destination at an elevation of 504 metres. If you would like to continue along the route, you can follow the green markings as far as Písecká Smoleč. On the final ascent to Burkovák is the so-called Kuličkovka, which was created in 2020. When planning your walk, you can choose between hora Tábor as your destination and continuing as far as Písecká Smoleč.
Festivities and other cultural attractions
Festivities on hora Tábor were revived in the early 1990s and have been held every year ever since. These festivities should be distinguished chronologically from the medieval religious gatherings on the hill: the two references concern different periods of history. If you would like to plan your trip around a celebration, check the specific date in advance. The U dvou Lip Chapel in Písecká Smoleč is also one of the sights of Slabčice, adding another named cultural attraction to the church and archaeology focus.
