Dačice can be explored through a range of themes: its architectural history spans the Renaissance palace and the castle remodelled in the Neoclassical style, while museum collections offer insights into the region and its history. Outdoors, you can choose between park walks and nature trails.

Castle history and collections

The State Castle of Dačice was originally built as a Renaissance castle for the Krajíř of Krajk family. It was built towards the end of the 16th century and acquired its present appearance through a Neoclassical remodelling in the 1830s. The restored visitor route offers an authentic glimpse into the life of the nobility in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The castle thus brings together its origins and later remodelling as two distinct building phases.

Starý zámek is also a Renaissance building: the palace was built between 1572 and 1579 and decorated with sgraffito ashlar work. Together, the two buildings illustrate different aspects of the Renaissance, while the present appearance of the State Castle also reflects its Neoclassical remodelling.

The Dačice Municipal Museum and Gallery combine regional themes with art and historical views. Permanent exhibitions cover the history and ethnography of the Dačice region, the world’s first sugar cube, historical photographs and postcards of Dačice, and notable figures from the region. The museum puts the size of its collection at around 30,000 items, including approximately 1,700 paintings, drawings and prints. These figures may change as cataloguing progresses. The museum also holds an extensive collection of graphic works by Max Švabinský.

Park, views and short walks

The castle park covers 10 hectares and includes a pond with an island. For a shorter walk, there is a roughly ten-minute loop around the chapel; the longer loop around the pond takes about 25 minutes. The two timings can help you plan and refer to different destinations within the park. Check seasonal access details before your visit.

Visitors to the tower of St. Lawrence Church can see a lapidarium and exhibition rooms, as well as enjoy views of Dačice and the surrounding area. Opening days and hours vary by season, so it is advisable to check them in advance.

Nature trails and longer excursions

The nature attractions trail links the natural monuments of Toužínské stráně, Moravská Dyje and Dubová stráň with other sites of ecological importance. Information panels provide details along the way, and selected stops have simple shelters with benches and tables. Toužínské stráně is a 3.07-hectare natural monument with drought-tolerant, steppe-like plants. More than 600 butterfly species occur there, along with rare beetle and reptile species. Dubová stráň is a deciduous woodland on the slopes of the Moravská Dyje valley, with warmth-loving species and forest communities, as well as rare and endangered animal species.

The Stezka hajného Kázka trail offers information about forest plants, fungi, trees, birds, mammals and insects, as well as interactive activities for children. These features were installed in 2025; check their condition before your visit. You can reach the Stezka hajného Kázka on foot or by bicycle. The excursion can be extended along part of the educational trail to Kostelní Vydří and back to Dačice around the ponds. This route is listed as 7 km and takes about two hours on foot; check the route details before setting out.

A longer option is the Vydří trail: it starts in Dačice at the road bridge over the Dyje and follows a 10 km green-marked route along the river from mill to mill. Nine stops with information panels accompany the trail, which ends in Staré Hobzí. From there, you can take a bus back to Dačice; check the timetable in advance. You should also check the route details again before your trip.
