Popelín combines a history of fortifications with Renaissance and Baroque architecture and a landscape of numerous hills, forests and ponds. The railway line and bus connections provide practical travel options before your arrival.

From Fortress to Renaissance Château

A fortress had been built in Popelín by the second half of the 14th century at the latest. At the end of the 16th century, Zikmund Kunrat Vrchotický z Loutkova converted it into a two-winged Renaissance château with a corner tower. This reveals two distinct construction phases: the building of the fortress and its later conversion into a château. “Two-winged” describes the layout in two wings; the corner tower is another feature of this Renaissance design.

Baroque Buildings and Sculpture

The granary, built in 1733, represents a different type of building: it is an example of high-quality Baroque architecture serving agricultural purposes. Alongside the conversion of the fortress into a Renaissance château, it shows that the town’s history also includes agricultural buildings. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary is a late Baroque religious building in the centre of the former Baroque spa complex. In this way, agricultural Baroque architecture and a religious building feature in different historical contexts.

The group of Atlas sculptures near the former château is made of shell limestone and dates from the first half of the 18th century. In the village square stands a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, an example of valuable sculptural work by a rural master stonemason from around 1730. Together, the works make local sculpture from that period visible in two different forms: as a group near the former château and as a single figure in the village square. A sundial can also be seen on a church in Popelín.

Landscape and Activities

Popelín’s terrain is characterised by numerous hills, forests and ponds. The surrounding area is suitable for hiking. This means that, alongside its architectural history, the landscape can also be a focus when planning your trip: if you enjoy exploring on foot, you can make hiking a priority.

The Popelín stage traditionally includes a children’s cycling race on a shortened route through the town. If the race is relevant to your travel dates, check the dates for that year’s event. Unlike hiking, the race is tied to a specific event and may therefore play a different role in your timing.
