Strmilov offers several ways to explore culture and landscape: on the market square, the Empire-style Church of St. Giles shapes the townscape; St. Andrew’s combines frescoes from around 1604 with a wartime memorial plaque. Tkalcovna Kubák represents textile craftsmanship, while Cycle Route 1113 passes through the town. The Hamerský potok has a preserved original riverbed that has been changed only slightly. Architecture, remembrance, craftsmanship and landscape thus offer different perspectives for discovering Strmilov.
St. Giles: an Empire-style church on the market square
The parish Church of St. Giles stands on the market square and is its central landmark. Following the major fires of 1824 and 1835, a new church was built between 1843 and 1849 in the Empire style. The church has three naves and a 33-metre-high prismatic tower. Its layout and the tower’s distinctive shape both help define the building. The church’s furnishings also include a stone baptismal font dating from 1725. It adds an earlier historical note alongside the 19th-century church building. The construction period, architecture and furnishings offer different ways to explore the history of this central landmark.
Frescoes and remembrance at St. Andrew’s
St. Andrew’s adds other historical traces to the story of the churches. The presbytery contains frescoes from around 1604. A memorial plaque on the church commemorates nine American airmen who were shot down near Vlčice in August 1944 and buried by the church wall. The frescoes and plaque thus refer to events far apart in time: the early history of the paintings and a specific event of the Second World War. The location near Vlčice and the number of airmen give the memorial a clearly defined historical context.
Textile crafts at Tkalcovna Kubák
Tkalcovna Kubák is a craft workshop specialising in traditional wool processing, weaving and designer home textiles. It currently produces mainly wool blankets, plaids and throws, as well as cotton tablecloths, placemats and bags. The product groups represent different materials and uses: wool textiles sit alongside cotton goods for the table and everyday life. This adds another cultural focus to the historic churches, centred on textile work and design.
Cycle Route 1113 and the Hamerský potok
The well-signposted Cycle Route 1113 between Telč and Jindřichův Hradec passes through Strmilov. If you plan to follow the route, check the signage and route conditions before setting out. The Hamerský potok offers a different landscape feature: its original riverbed remains intact and has been changed only slightly. The cycle route and the stream therefore offer different points of interest when planning a trip—the route links two places, while the riverbed preserves the watercourse’s original form.
Open Air Strmilov
Open Air Strmilov is an annual concert held at the town’s sports complex. At the event on 14 August 2026, Tlustá Berta, Walda Gang and The Fibers performed. If you would like to combine a stay with the concert, check the dates for the relevant edition before making plans.
