Jindřichův Hradec 1 can be explored through a variety of themes: Jindřišské údolí, with its paths and forest habitats; Ratmírovský rybník near Malý Ratmírov; and architectural and castle remains in Blažejov. If you mainly want to hike, you can use the valley sections as a guide; for a cultural focus, the Church of Saint Elizabeth offers specific insights into several building phases.

Walking through Jindřišské údolí

Jindřišské údolí is about seven kilometres long. The section from Jindřiš to Pod Blažejovem measures approximately 3.5 kilometres, and the section from Pod Blažejovem to Malý Ratmírov is the same length. The two sections are therefore similar in length but lead to different endpoints. This can help you choose if you have a specific walking distance in mind rather than just the total length.

The Jindrova naučná stezka runs via Jindřiš and Blažejov to Malý Ratmírov. Every information board has a children’s section intended for preschoolers and younger schoolchildren. The marked path through Jindřišské údolí is suitable for pedestrians only; in particular, the lower section of the valley is impassable by bicycle. If you are planning a cycling trip, take this restriction into account when choosing your route.

Another route description leads from Jindřichův Hradec to Malý Ratmírov: after the wilder section of Jindřišské údolí, the route reaches the dam of Ratmírovský rybník. This helps distinguish two specific landmarks: the Jindrova naučná stezka runs through Jindřiš and Blažejov to Malý Ratmírov, while the described route from Jindřichův Hradec ends at the pond dam.

Forest habitats and water near Malý Ratmírov

The character of Jindřišské údolí is shaped by block-scree forests, fir stands and relict pine forests. Protected plant and animal species also define the area. In addition to its marked paths, the valley therefore offers a distinct focus on nature, setting it apart from the historic buildings and castle remains in the surrounding area.

Near Malý Ratmírov, Ratmírovský rybník lies directly beside Hamerský potok. Malý Ratmírov belongs to the municipality of Blažejov. The pond is currently used as an important recreational waterbody; the route from Jindřichův Hradec to Malý Ratmírov reaches its dam. The nature trails and waterside landscape offer different points of interest: the valley focuses on forest types and walking paths, while the pond is notable for its recreational use and its position as a landmark along the water.

Church and castle remains in Blažejov

The Church of Saint Elizabeth in Blažejov dates back to an early Gothic building from the second half of the 13th century. The portal on the ground floor of the tower dates from around 1300. In 1863–1864, the church was extended and remodelled in the Neo-Romanesque style. Its architecture can be described through specific structural features: the masonry building has a single nave, a polygonal presbytery, buttresses and a western tower. Those interested in historic architectural styles can find early Gothic origins here alongside a later 19th-century remodelling.

The remains of Vítkův hrádek can be visited on a rocky promontory above Hamerský potok, below Blažejov. The medieval watch castle dates from the first half of the 13th century. Its triangular core was protected by a rampart and moat. The surviving traces include remains of a wall and a palace with so-called herringbone masonry. This site offers a different kind of historical insight from the church: the focus here is on the medieval castle core and its wall remains.
