Písečné U Slavonic lies in the valley of the Moravská Dyje River. When planning your trip, two distinct perspectives emerge: the town’s history, made tangible by its Jewish cemetery and castle, and a river landscape with protected habitats and named cycling routes. This can help you decide whether historic buildings or the combination of natural surroundings and cycling should be the focus of your trip.

Cultural Heritage and Jewish History

The cultural heritage passed down in Písečné reflects Czech, German, and Jewish cultures; traces of all three are preserved in its monuments. A clearly defined period in the town’s Jewish history spans 1726 to 1729: during this time, the Jewish community effectively formed an independent political municipality.

The dates associated with the Jewish cemetery range from tombstones dating to the first half of the 18th century to the date on the last legible tombstone, August 11, 1936. With its mortuary, cemetery wall, and tombstones, the cemetery is considered an exceptionally well-preserved ensemble. Its physical condition may change over time. The information about the older tombstones and the last legible date are two distinct points of reference.

The Castle and Historic Architectural Forms

Písečné Castle is a Late Gothic, four-winged building with an inner courtyard. “Four-winged” describes a layout with four wings; the inner courtyard is another specific feature of the castle. Its architecture can thus be described in terms of its layout and internal arrangement, without assuming that the interior is open to visitors.

A distillery added to the north side of the castle was built in the second half of the 19th century. West of the castle stands a large, two-storey granary dating from the last quarter of the 18th century. Their location, function, and dates set these two buildings apart: the distillery is part of the castle, while the granary stands on its own to the west. Together with the Late Gothic castle, they offer three distinct points of reference for the town’s architecture.

The Moravská Dyje and Cycling Routes

The Moravská Dyje Natura 2000 site provides suitable habitat for the Eurasian otter and the bitterling. The municipality of Písečné is also part of this area. It is home to protected and rare animal and plant species associated with flowing waters, wetlands, and floodplain meadows, as well as mesic to xeric grasslands and open rocky habitats. The natural area should therefore be considered not only in terms of the river, but also its several distinct habitat types. If you wish to explore these areas specifically, check access locally.

The local route information also offers two distinct ways to orient yourself when cycling. Stage 6 of EuroVelo 13 runs along the route Slavonice–Gilgenberg–Písečné–Dešná–Hluboká–Drosendorf. Long-distance cycle route 48 Prague–Vienna passes through Slavonice, Písečné, and Vratěnín. The first description gives the sequence of stops on a specific stage; the second places Písečné on the Prague–Vienna route. This distinction can help you plan your ride around the route framework you want. Before setting out, check the current signage and trail conditions, as both may change.
