Malé Chrášťany combines distinctive vernacular Baroque farmsteads with a small chapel and two cycling routes that pass through the village. On the village square, several farmsteads can be distinguished by their façades and entrances. This gives you two different ways to plan your visit: focus on the village’s appearance and architectural history, or take a cycling trip with Malé Chrášťany as a stop along the way.

Vernacular Baroque farmsteads on the village square

The enclosed farmstead at Malé Chrášťany No. 3 groups its buildings around a courtyard. Its vernacular Baroque façade, with two gables, has a gate and a small gate facing the village square. Farmstead No. 4 also has a façade with two gables and a gate and small gate facing the square. At both farmsteads, the gables and entrances are defining features; the buildings grouped around a courtyard give each ensemble its enclosed form.

No. 4 also includes a granary with a vernacular Baroque gable and adjoining stables. A boundary wall with a gate and small gate connects the granary to the residence. The building’s history goes back further than its present Baroque appearance: Farmstead No. 4, also known as Boží Oko 1, was remodeled in 1850 from a medieval wooden log house. No. 5 stands on the west side of the village square and also has a vernacular Baroque façade with two gables; its connected gate and small gate face the square.

The niche chapel of St. Vojtěch

The brick niche chapel of St. Vojtěch stands on the southern edge of Malé Chrášťany. The small building has a rectangular ground plan and faces south. Šebastián Brenner built the chapel between 1860 and 1862. Its former function is also part of the village’s history: it served as a place for the final farewell to the deceased. Together with the farmsteads on the village square, it forms a second, distinct architectural landmark in the village.

Cycling routes through Malé Chrášťany

Cycle Route No. 1083 passes through Malé Chrášťany, from Plástovice to Břehov. The “Kolem Pištína na Blata” cycle loop also passes through the village; it is described as approximately 24 kilometers long, easy, and aimed primarily at families with children and seniors. The two descriptions offer different points of reference for planning: Route No. 1083 names the places along the route, while the loop description focuses on its length, difficulty level and intended cyclists.

Malé Chrášťany is one of the central villages in the region historically known as Zbudovská Blata. Its landscape is flat and connected by a network of cycling routes. If you want to choose your route based not only on individual buildings in the village but also on cycling in the wider region, this provides the broader context for your visit.

Getting there by bus

Local information updated in September 2019 describes a scheduled bus service from České Budějovice to Sedlec continuing to Malé Chrášťany. Before travelling, check the current timetable and whether the service is still running. This lets you plan the bus journey separately from your choice of either of the two cycling options.
