In Střížov, various architectural details and traditions maintained each year tell the story of the town’s past. The church dedicated to St Martin, individual farmsteads and a niche chapel each offer a different perspective. The landscape also offers two clearly distinct points of interest: a view from a path to the southwest and a longer circular cycling route that passes through Střížov. When choosing a destination based on cultural history and landscape, you can weigh these themes against each other as you plan.

Gothic traces in the Church of St Martin

The listed church dedicated to St Martin has early Gothic origins. Among its older features is a Gothic chancel; the nave was given a new vault in 1660. The early Gothic pointed-arch portal and remnants of medieval wall paintings add to the picture of the building’s history. The structure thus brings together features from different periods, and its history cannot be reduced to a single date.

The church also contains tangible historical evidence: a Gothic bell dating from 1418 is still there. The tombstone of Karel Kořenský z Terešova, who died in 1619, is also preserved. Alongside its architecture, these two details give the church a personal and temporal dimension. For a stay focused on the history of sacred architecture, the portal, chancel, wall paintings, bell and tombstone are therefore different aspects of the same place.

Farmsteads and a chapel in the townscape

Various details of the farmsteads draw attention to their architectural history and features. Farmstead Třetinů No. 17 is notable for its gables. Late Baroque statues of saints once stood on the gable of farmstead Otrubů No. 8. The difference in timing is important: the gables of Třetinů are described as notable, while the statues at Otrubů refer to an earlier set of features.

A 2021 description locates the niche chapel of the Virgin Mary near the end of the village, on the road towards Komařice, and describes it as preserved. Its construction is thought to date to the second half of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century. This is a probable timeframe, not a precise date. Together with the farmsteads, the chapel broadens the view beyond the church to include other small traces of the area’s architectural history.

Annual traditions and their history

The Bartolomějská pouť pilgrimage takes place every year at the Church of St Martin. The pilgrimage was moved there from the former Church of St Bartholomew in the nearby Želno valley. This connection explains why a local custom brings two church sites into the story. The church in the valley was completed in 1679 and was sometimes referred to as a branch church of the parish church of St Martin in Střížov.

Střížov also maintains the masopustní koleda tradition each year. The pilgrimage and this tradition are two recurring cultural events to keep in mind when planning different kinds of trips. If you want to time your visit to coincide with either event, check the specific dates in advance. This distinguishes the annual recurrence from planning a visit for a particular date.

Views over the landscape or a longer cycling loop

A path from Střížov in a southwesterly direction offers views from the Novohradské hory to Blanský les, including Kleť and part of Šumava. This is a different way to explore the surroundings from the cycling loop through Doudlebsko and Novohradsko: it passes through Střížov between Doudleby and Lomec and is 110 kilometres long in total. The route is rated moderate to challenging and is suitable for trekking and mountain bikes; conditions may vary by season.

This gives you a specific distinction to consider when planning: the path in a southwesterly direction is associated with a viewpoint, while the loop is a long route with a stated difficulty level and suitable bike types. If you are considering the cycling tour, you can use this information to plan your ride and take seasonal conditions into account. It is also worth checking the latest event dates before your trip.
