The “Na kole Doudlebskem a Novohradskem” cycling route passes through Strážkovice; to the east of the village, Trocnov is another point of interest for culture enthusiasts. If you would like to combine cycling with history, you will find routes of varying lengths here, as well as a village landscape that preserves traces of the past. When choosing a holiday apartment, the length of your planned stay may be a deciding factor: will it be mainly for cycling, or would you also like to set aside time for the history of the village and its surroundings?
Cycling on different scales
The “Na kole Doudlebskem a Novohradskem” cycling route passes through Strážkovice. It is 110 kilometres long in total and is divided into two stages of 58 and 52 kilometres. The route is described as moderate to challenging and is suitable for trekking bikes and mountain bikes. The stage lengths provide a concrete guide for planning and can be matched to the time available for your trip.
The “K rodišti Jana Žižky z Trocnova” cycling trip offers a different timeframe: it is 63.7 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty and suitable for a full-day excursion. The distinction is clear: this trip is intended to take a full day, while the 110-kilometre route is explicitly divided into two stages. The CT1121 cycling route also passes through Strážkovice, on the way from Střížov to Trocnov. A 73-kilometre cycling route is also recommended for the “Stezka kovářství” educational trail.
There is an electric-bike charging station in the village centre, next to the cultural centre with its restaurant. Installed in 2024, it has four bike stands and a compressor for inflating tyres. As route conditions and infrastructure may change, it is worth checking the latest information about the route and charging station before setting off.
Landscape around Strážkovice
Strážkovice lies on the eastern slope of Strážkovická hora. At 557 metres, it is the highest point in the municipality. In favourable weather, the view from there extends far across the surrounding area and sometimes as far as the Alps. Visibility therefore depends on the weather; if you are planning to take in the view, you should also check the conditions on the day of your visit.
Village landscape and historical traces
The Strážkovice forge, a technical monument, stands on the village green. It was probably still being used for its original purpose until 1969. The stone road sign is another prominent example of historic transport infrastructure: it is regarded as a valuable, authentically preserved example of the small structures that supplemented the growing road networks in the 19th century. The forge and the road sign thus offer two different points of historical interest for visitors.
The regular settlement layout and the large, spacious village green suggest that the village was founded during the high medieval colonisation of the 13th or 14th century. Because of its historic buildings on the hill, Strážkovice is one of the so-called fire villages. In times of danger, residents used fires at night to warn of approaching troops. This traditional interpretation links the village’s location with its settlement history.
Trocnov and additions to the church history
Trocnov lies about two kilometres east of Strážkovice and is a national cultural monument. The Trocnov complex includes a signposted circular trail with remains of former farmsteads. Jan Žižka lived at one of these farmsteads, and his uncle lived at the other. The memorial site also includes a museum exhibition on the Hussite movement. A visit therefore focuses both on the traces of the former farmsteads and on a historical subject.
Another testament to the region’s history is the Church of St Martin in Střížov. It serves as the parish church for Strážkovice and was consecrated in 1493. Together with the forge, the stone road sign and the Trocnov complex, it offers several ways to explore the history of the area.
