In Branišovice, Hradiště is a prominent landmark if you would like to explore history and landscape together. The early medieval Slavic fortified settlement lies on the right bank of the Malše, directly opposite the well-known pilgrimage site of Římov. Here, a clearly defined historical subject meets a striking topographical setting. If you are looking for a destination with a cultural focus, Hradiště offers a clear point of reference: its former function, its extent, and its location by the river can be considered as related aspects without conflating them with the village’s later history.

Early fortification and village history

In the 8th century or, at the latest, the 9th century, Hradiště was an important Slavic stronghold and lookout point. Its date makes the site an early chapter in the history of the area. Branišovice was probably founded in the 13th century; the village was first mentioned in writing in 1398. These details mark different periods: Hradiště’s function belongs to the Early Middle Ages, the probable founding of the village took place centuries later, and 1398 marks the first written record. Anyone interested in historical context can thus distinguish between the earlier fortification and the village’s later history.

Extent and traces in the landscape

The three-part site covers 2.8 hectares. At about 350 to 370 metres long and 30 to 70 metres wide, its extent becomes even more tangible. Taken together, the area and measurements convey the scale of Hradiště; the length and width figures are approximate ranges. These measurements describe the site across several dimensions rather than relying on a single figure.

The topography also shapes Hradiště. It is located on a spur 50 to 55 metres high on the right bank of the Malše; steep slopes border the site towards the Malše and the narrow canyon of the Branišovický potok. The height refers to the spur, not to the remains of the fortifications. A section of the middle rampart survives up to 2.5 metres high. In front of the eastern rampart, part of the ditch is still visible as a slight depression in the ground. Different features are therefore found side by side: steep slopes as natural boundaries, and the rampart and ditch as archaeological structures.

Branišovice’s cultural setting

Branišovice is part of the protected Římovsko Cultural Landscape. This places the cultural context beyond the extent of Hradiště itself: the site is a specific historical place, while the cultural landscape sets the village within a larger protected area. When choosing a travel destination, this offers a different focus from the fortification’s measurements or design; the two perspectives draw attention to different aspects of the place.

A signpost on the Křížová cesta educational trail in Římov points to a turnoff for Branišovice’s Hradiště. If you are considering including the archaeological site in your travel plans, the trail offers a named reference point for orientation.
