In Týn nad Vltavou, discoveries range from local history and art to nature and seasonal activities on the water. For planning your visit, these highlights can be easily distinguished: the town museum focuses, among other things, on Moldavites and puppetry; at Semenec, nature and views take centre stage; and excursion boats combine a cruise along the river with a visit to the Kořensko Reservoir.
Culture and local history
The town museum is housed in the former castle at the upper end of the square. It displays Bohemia’s largest collection of Moldavites. Another exhibition on puppetry commemorates Matěj Kopecký. Thus, the same museum gives prominence to two distinct subjects: Moldavites and puppetry.
The Vltavotýnské underground passages are a historic and technical monument. They are open to the public as part of guided tours. Those interested in art will find a different focus at the Týn nad Vltavou Town Gallery: it specialises in art forms connected with the world of books or texts. Painting and photography exhibitions are also occasionally held there. As the programme may change, check which exhibitions are currently on before visiting.
Churches and historic buildings also offer a glimpse into the town’s history. St. Vitus Church is an early Baroque building dating from 1681 to 1682. The publicly accessible tower of St. James’s Church houses a painting exhibition; access arrangements may vary, so it is advisable to check before visiting.
A newer salt house has been preserved as a protected cultural monument. Its façade is decorated with frescoes depicting mermaids and lions carrying salt barrels; the frescoes probably date from the early 19th century. A second salt house was built in 1708 on the left bank of the Vltava. These dates and motifs add further aspects of local history to the churches and exhibitions.
Nature, views and activities
The Semenec Museum is a four-hectare natural science park with games, educational activities, adventure challenges and activities for children. Its park collections include native and exotic plants as well as rocks and fossils. The activities therefore combine playful challenges with a variety of natural science collections.
The 5-metre-high Semenec lookout tower, built in the 1930s, offers a different perspective. From there, views extend across the Vltava and the entire town of Týn nad Vltavou. While the museum focuses on its collections and activities, the tower offers views of the river and town.
A disc golf course has been available above the Hlinky Reservoir since August 2025. It is open to everyone free of charge every day and is suitable for all age groups; check the access conditions before your visit. Disc golf discs can be borrowed from the tourist information centre during opening hours. A national identity card and a refundable deposit of 100 Kč are required. As borrowing conditions may change, check the latest information in advance.
River, trails and seasonal experiences
Seasonal excursion boats depart from Týn nad Vltavou for round trips to the confluence of the Vltava and Lužnice, continuing to the Kořensko Reservoir and back. The route offers a specific way to experience the river and reservoir on a single cruise. Check sailing dates before planning your trip.
A walking route is described for visiting the Baroque sandstone sculpture group at Velký Depot: it starts in the Hlinecké sídliště residential area in Týn nad Vltavou and follows an avenue parallel to the road to Veselí nad Lužnicí. In the Na Šancích forest, turn left; the sculpture group is about 0.5 kilometres farther on. Trail conditions may change, so it is worth checking before setting out. The monument commemorates the disaster that occurred at the camp there on 21 June 1753.
At the tip of the confluence of the Vltava and Lužnice stand wayside shrines, locally also called Semenecká kaple, even though they are not a chapel. This difference between the local name and the actual form of the structure also makes the site interesting to travellers who notice small details of local history.
Another seasonal option is the open-air theatre with a rotating stage, built in 1983. During the summer season, the Vltavan theatre group regularly organises performances by ensembles from the region and beyond. The stage is also used for concerts and music festivals. As specific dates are part of the programme, check them before your visit.
