Přeštice reveals itself through several cultural threads: the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary shapes the landscape, the Dům historie Přešticka (Přeštice Regional History Museum) focuses on regional crafts and everyday history, and a nature trail offers a longer activity on foot or by bicycle. There is also a ceramic artwork and the traditional Přeštický kanec event. When planning your trip, you can choose among different highlights: architectural history, museum themes, outdoor activity and a cultural event held on a specific date.

Baroque Architecture and the Townscape

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a landmark in the landscape of Přeštice and also the largest Baroque church in the Czech Republic outside Prague. It was built between 1750 and 1775 to plans by K. I. Dientzenhofer. The construction period and design offer specific starting points for viewing the building both architecturally and in relation to the townscape. Visits are possible by prior arrangement, so be sure to arrange your visit in advance.

Crafts and Everyday History

The Dům historie Přešticka (Přeštice Regional History Museum) focuses on regional occupations and objects. The first floor showcases crafts and trades typical of the region. The museum also displays historical tools, equipment, products and household items. These themes offer a glimpse into different aspects of regional everyday life: both craft work and the things used in homes and businesses. The museum also offers engaging demonstrations of traditional craft techniques. This makes the visit quite different from exploring the church's architectural history.

A Nature Trail for Longer Outings

The “Se sv. Vojtěchem okolím Přešticka” nature trail has twelve stops and is suitable for longer walks and bike rides. It offers another way to spend time in Přeštice: rather than focusing on a single building or museum collection, the emphasis is on a tour with several stops. The nature trail opened on April 26, 2015, at 2 p.m. at the Evangelical parish in Přeštice. If you would rather combine your trip with exercise than visit architecture or an exhibition, you can take this into account when planning.

Ceramic Pigs and Přeštický kanec

A distinctive local artwork stands in the grounds of the former agricultural cooperative on the main road from Přeštice to Klatovy: two ceramic pigs on a plinth, created by Jaroslav Podmol. The material, subject and artist give the work a clear connection to local culture.

The Přeštický kanec event is also associated with a particular theme. Traditionally, it takes place on a Saturday in October in Přeštice's market square. The program includes pig-slaughter feasts, competitions, singing and the sale of pork products. If you want to time your trip to coincide with the event, check the specific date, as the Saturday may vary.

When looking for a hotel in Přeštice, it helps to first decide on the main reason for your trip: the architecture and townscape, regional craft history, a longer walk or bike ride, or a visit to Přeštický kanec on a suitable Saturday in October. This lets you plan your trip around the experience that matters most to you, rather than combining the different options into a single itinerary.
