The Staroplzenecká educational trail makes Starý Plzenec a tangible destination for a specific hike: the circular route leads to historical, cultural, architectural and natural landmarks. Sacred buildings, archaeological traces and protected natural sites add further, distinct points of interest; at BOHEMIA SEKT, you can also visit the sparkling wine production facilities. When planning, you can choose how to balance hiking, cultural sites, scenery and food and drink.

Hiking and nature along the educational trail

The educational trail is ten kilometres long and takes about three hours. It begins and ends in the square in Starý Plzenec, by the Church of St John the Baptist, and leads via Sedlec before returning. The terrain is easy but varies in elevation; check the trail conditions before setting out. Stops include Černá stráň, a protected fossil site, and Starý rybník in Sedlec, a natural monument on the trail. Restrictions may apply to fossil collecting.

Andrejšky in Starý Plzenec is a protected natural area featuring a ridge of bizarrely shaped silicate rocks. This rock formation adds a distinctive landscape feature alongside the archaeological sites and sacred buildings.

Archaeological traces and sacred buildings

On the acropolis of the Hůrka hillfort are the excavated foundations of the Church of St Lawrence. In the eastern outer bailey are the excavated foundations of the Church of the Holy Cross. The two sites mark different parts of the same hillfort.

The town is also home to the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, which has rare Gothic frescoes and is a protected immovable cultural monument. A different architectural style is represented by the Romanesque Rotunda of St Peter and St Paul. It is one of the oldest fully preserved sacred buildings of its kind in the Czech Republic. From Malostranské náměstí, it can only be reached on foot via a marked educational trail. The two sites show sacred architecture in different states of preservation: the foundations on Hůrka are exposed, while the rotunda is fully preserved.

Sparkling wine tasting and getting there

At the BOHEMIA SEKT manufactory, you can taste freshly disgorged sparkling wine. Tours of the sparkling wine production facilities and tastings of selected sparkling wines are also available; check the reservation details before travelling. BOHEMIA SEKT is 12 minutes from Plzeň Main Railway Station, and bus routes 50 and 51 also go there. Check the current timetables before travelling.

Find a hotel to match the focus of your visit
