Šťáhlavy offers several distinct highlights for a cultural trip: Šťáhlavy Castle, with its Renaissance and Baroque history; the organ in St. Adalbert’s Church; and the Neoclassical Kozel Hunting Lodge. The area also has a history of parks and landscapes, as well as archaeological traces. You can choose your cultural focus based on whether you are more interested in architectural styles, instrument making, or the history of the landscape and castle.

Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassicism

Šťáhlavy Castle is an example of a rural Renaissance building that was altered by Baroque additions. The castle grounds include a park. These two stylistic terms do not refer to two separate castles: the Baroque additions altered the Renaissance building itself. The connection between the two periods is therefore key to understanding it.

Kozel Hunting Lodge offers a different architectural focus. It was built as a Neoclassical hunting lodge at the end of the 18th century under the direction of master builder Václav Haberditz for its patron, Jan Vojtěch Černín. Haberditz directed the construction; Černín was the patron. In contrast to the Renaissance building shaped by Baroque additions, Kozel is primarily Neoclassical. This allows you to compare two different architectural histories: the transformation of a Renaissance building and the creation of a Neoclassical castle.

Park and Landscape History

The grounds of Šťáhlavy Castle include a park. By contrast, the setting of Kozel Castle is a spacious landscape park, whose present-day design was shaped by gardener František Xaver Franz in the 1870s. The comparison draws attention to two distinct aspects: a park as part of a castle’s grounds and the development of an extensive landscape garden. If you would like to focus on garden history as well as architecture, Franz’s work offers a specific historical reference.

Organ Building and Unusual Details

The organ in St. Adalbert’s Church in Šťáhlavy was built in 1856 by organ builder Ferdinand Guth of Čistá. Its distinctive arrangement of pipes is related to the space: because of the low ceiling above the choir, the largest pipes lie horizontally beneath the choir floor. This arrangement is considered unique in the world. If you are choosing between architectural and musical history, the organ offers a focus of its own: it brings together a precise year of construction, a named organ builder, and an unusual structural solution.

Lopata Castle and Archaeological Traces

An older history leads to Lopata Castle. It was probably founded by Heřman of Litice between 1367 and 1377 on the site of a prehistoric settlement. Two periods of history therefore meet here: the prehistoric settlement and the presumed founding of the castle in the 14th century. The ruins of Lopata Castle are currently part of the F. X. France educational trail.

An archaeological educational trail in Kozelské polesí commemorates F. X. France, an important 19th-century amateur archaeologist and gardener at Kozel Castle. His work in both archaeology and gardening provides a specific historical point of reference. The Okolo Kozlu trail offers a different way to find your bearings: it starts at the edge of the forest by Lopatský Pond below Kozel Castle and ends at the tourist signpost above the upper castle gate. Both endpoints of the described route are clearly identified.
