Pačejov brings together several cultural-historical and landscape highlights: a church in its present form dating from the 19th century, remains of a medieval fortress and smaller religious monuments. There is also a viewpoint on Mount Slavník and terrain for cross-country skiing in winter. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these attractions according to your interests and the season.
The church and the town’s earlier history
The Church of Our Lady of the Snows (“Kostel Panny Marie Sněžné”) is considered the most significant monument in Pačejov. It was remodelled into its present form in 1871. Its bell tower houses a peal of four bells, unique in the wider area. This gives the church several points of interest for those interested in architectural and local history: the dated development of its present appearance and a distinctive feature of its peal.
An older historical layer can be seen in the building complex of the former estate. Remains of a medieval fortress have been preserved there; locally, the complex is called “Zámeček.” While the church’s remodelling in 1871 provides a point of reference in time, the fortress remains date back to the Middle Ages. Those interested in history across different periods will find two distinct historical themes here.
Wayside crosses, a chapel and local traditions
The wayside cross near Velešice is one of the smaller religious monuments in the Pačejov area. In Strážovice, a wayside cross dates from the 17th century; there is also a Baroque, hexagonal chapel with a bell tower. These examples differ in their form and historical context: from the wayside cross near Velešice to the dated cross and the chapel with its clearly specified architectural features.
Monument preservation also includes the work of a local association, which has restored monuments in the Pačejov and Velešice area. The condition of individual monuments should be checked locally. The tradition of “posezení pod májkou” (gathering beneath the Maypole) is also kept alive and includes an afternoon cultural programme. Historical buildings and a continuing local cultural tradition thus offer distinct themes.
Landscape and season
Mount Slavník offers views of the Šumava foothills and the landscape below Slavník. In winter, the surrounding area provides terrain for cross-country skiing. Snow conditions affect whether this seasonal activity is suitable for your specific travel dates. The viewpoint and cross-country skiing appeal to different interests: one offers a scenic view, while the other is a winter activity whose conditions depend on the snow cover.
Getting there and possible reasons to visit
Pačejov has train and bus connections. If you are choosing a holiday apartment and planning to travel by public transport, check the connections for your travel dates.
The Pačejov Rally is a recurring motorsport event. Its special stages run in the area around Horažďovice, Čečelovice, Třebohostice and Pačejov. If the rally is relevant to your travel plans, check the dates and route for the edition in question: both can change. Unlike the historic buildings, this reason to visit is tied to specific event dates and routes.
