In Tužice, the area’s early written history meets a tradition of stone quarrying and processing that continues to this day. The granodiorite quarry adds a geological dimension to this focus; nearby, a circular route by the pond, a hiking trail and Velhartice Castle offer other points of interest. When planning, it is helpful to distinguish between Tužice’s own attractions and the separate destinations in the surrounding area.

Local history and stoneworking tradition

The oldest officially confirmed written mention of Tužice dates from 1361. The oldest entry in the land register of the Nalžov estate concerns the Tužice inn and dates from 1767. The year 1910 marks a specific beginning for stoneworking: stonemason Matěj Šolar built a house in Tužice and began quarrying stone in the Chvalici forest. Stone quarrying and processing are part of the area’s historical and present-day tradition. Here, written local history and the development of a local craft exist side by side.

Granodiorite and quarry

The Tužice (Vlčí hora) quarry is an active granodiorite quarry; operations may change over time. Its face reaches a height of up to 45 metres, and the extraction levels are 15 to 18 metres high. The granodiorite is medium-grained and is described as either blue-grey or dark grey; its geological name is hornblende-biotite granodiorite. The material is used to make paving cubes, kerbstones, masonry stones, rubble stone, garden features and gravel. The product range may change. Processing is limited exclusively to rough stonework. A permit is required to drive to the quarry; check this requirement before your visit.

Getting around Tužice

The chapel dedicated to the Assumption of Mary is part of Tužice’s central area, which is characterised by linden trees. The local road network includes roads I/22 and III/02213, as well as local roads. When planning to walk or cycle, the area covered is important: no marked hiking or cycling routes pass through the Tužice planning area. This statement applies to the planning area; future updates to the plan may change it.

Trips in the nearby area

The Hnačov circular route runs around the largest recreational pond in the Klatovy District and is also suitable for families with small children. Near Nalžovské Hory, the blue hiking trail leads from the town centre to Prašivice; the route is about 2 km long. The two options differ in their focus: the Hnačov circular route is explicitly described as suitable for families with small children, while the route to Prašivice is outlined by its destination and approximate length.

At Velhartice Castle, a cultural destination in the surrounding area, both the castle and palace interiors are currently open to visitors. Check access before travelling. The area around Tužice is also suitable for picking mushrooms and wild berries. Alongside the named routes, visitors can therefore choose between a visit to historic interiors and an outdoor activity focused on nature.
