Útěchov lies two kilometres south of Moravská Třebová in a valley running from south to north, through which the Třebůvka flows. On the eastern side, the west-facing slope of Kamenná hora shapes the terrain; its highest point reaches 577 metres. To the west lies the rolling landscape of Ovčiny, formerly called Ovčácké údolí. The stream, slope and western landscape provide the area with a clear spatial orientation.

Landscape and Geological Classification

The named areas also differ geologically: the Kamenné hory range dates from the Cretaceous period and consists of sandstone and marl, while Ovčiny is assigned to the Permian period. Sandstone and marl refer to the rock types; the Cretaceous and Permian periods indicate their geological classification. The western spur of the Kamenné hory is called Kouzelná hora. Because of its distinctive shape, local residents also call it “Ošatková hora”. The landscape thus brings together different geological associations and names that identify particular landforms.

Settlement and Local History

A Slavic settlement stood on the hill now known as Hrádek, between Útěchov and Dlouhá Loučka. Towards the end of this settlement period, during the time of Břetislav, a hillfort was built there. During a later reconstruction of the fortifications, ditches were dug and new ramparts, the castle mound and the outer bailey were built up. Hrádek thus represents a chapter in local history shaped by both settlement and the development of fortifications.

The oldest building in Útěchov is the former fief estate. It was once the seat of the fief holders of the Moravská Třebová domain. The fief estate therefore points to a different historical function from the fortification at Hrádek: the former relates to the old system of lordship, while the latter relates to settlement and defensive structures.

Distinguishing Archaeological Traces

At the southern edge of Útěchov, traces of ditches and ramparts mark the site of a former water castle. Archaeological finds date it to the turn of the 14th century, from the 13th to the 14th century. Its location distinguishes it from Hrádek: the water castle stood at the southern edge of the village, while the hill known as Hrádek lies between Útěchov and Dlouhá Loučka. Finds from Útěchov’s cadastral area also include an elongated stone Neolithic grinder, kept in the museum in Moravská Třebová. This means that the landscape traces and an archaeological find from a different period can be considered as distinct points of interest.

Local Culture and Planning

Útěchov’s traditional Shrovetide celebrations included a feast known as “Sautanz”, with jitrnice sausages, barley soup, sausages and meat. The Útěchover Zvonice is currently in a dilapidated state and is not used for ringing. As its condition may change, check its current status before a possible visit.

A marked local cycling route passes through Útěchov. Check its status before your ride. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you want your trip to focus more on the landscape and geological features, or on settlement, fortifications and local history. Both perspectives can help you choose a destination that suits your interests.
