Radkov lies on the Třebůvka River; traces of medieval fortifications, a historic mill and two named cycle routes give the place several specific points of interest. Its history stretches from the founding of a fortified small town to structural remains still visible in the terrain. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Radkov, you can choose your focus accordingly: Would you mainly like to explore the town’s history, or see Radkov as part of a cycling route? The distinctions below will help you sort out these interests.

Traces of Fortifications and Hradisko

According to archaeological interpretation, the fortified small town of Radkov was founded in the second half of the 13th century, with a small castle seat. Radkovské Hradisko lies south of Radkov, in the cadastral area of Gruna. It is considered a significant archaeological site dating to the Middle Ages and High Middle Ages; the types recorded there include a fortification, a fortified manor and a hilltop settlement. These three terms place different emphasis on the site: they refer to a fortification, a fortified seat and a settlement on a hill.

Radkovské Hradisko is over 200 metres long and 70 metres wide. Its forecourt was protected by a curtain wall 60 metres long and 280 centimetres thick. These measurements distinguish the extent of the site from the length and thickness of the forecourt’s curtain wall. A ditch carved into the rock, up to 30 metres wide, is also visible in the terrain—a remnant of the fortified settlement of Radkov and its defences.

Cycle Routes Through and from Radkov

For cyclists, two named routes provide specific guidance. Marked cycle route No. 506 runs from Moravská Třebová to Městečko Trnávka via Linhartice, Radkov and Rozstání. Radkov is one of the named places on the connection between the two towns. Cycle route No. 4043 runs from Radkovské Hradisko via Gruna and Žipotín to Nad Svojanovem. For comparison when planning, consider the sequence of places: No. 506 runs through Radkov, while No. 4043 starts at Hradisko. Check the route numbers locally before setting off.

Mill History and the Village Landscape

Dolní Mill, Fleckův mlýn, offers a different historical perspective. Its first recorded mention dates from 1680, when it was known as “Rottendorf mühle – Radkovský mlýn”. In 1835, it was described as a masonry mill building with two wheels powered by a millrace on the right bank of the Třebůvka. The dates show two distinct historical points of reference: the mill’s name in 1680, and its construction and power source in 1835. Unlike the fortifications, the focus here is on the use of water.

In the village landscape, evidence of farming complements the archaeological themes: the original farmsteads and farmhouses in Radkov have been preserved to varying degrees. Surviving bell towers have also been recorded in Radkov and neighbouring Rozstání. These village traces offer a different scale for exploring the place than Hradisko and its curtain wall.
