A late Renaissance relief, a Baroque statue group, and an extensive network of educational hiking trails reveal different facets of Kunčina and the places mentioned. Those interested in architectural history will find specific details in the churches and monuments; those who prefer the outdoors can follow the Hřebeč Mining Trails and head for the viewpoints. You can choose how much weight to give each theme based on your interests, without treating them as a single circular route.
Churches and monuments: architectural styles and history
St. George’s Church in Kunčina is a single-nave building. Inside, a Renaissance barrel vault and a wooden gallery shape the space; the Late Gothic portal is in the tower. The church also has two contrasting features: a late Renaissance relief of St. George dating from the late 16th century and a Rococo Stations of the Cross. The building, relief, and Stations of the Cross bring together several periods, though the individual elements cannot all be dated to the same period.
In front of the church stands a Baroque sculptural group commemorating the plague epidemic of 1715 and other misfortunes that affected Kunčina and Nová Ves. Twelve statues of saints stand on a terrace enclosed by a balustrade; four more statues of saints are set on columns. The balustrade with its Baroque statues and the nearby Calvary group are listed as immovable cultural monuments. Thus, both the design of the ensemble and its protected status are important features of the area in front of the church.
Another stop in the history of architecture and church furnishings is the Church of St. Roch in Nová Ves. It dates from 1857; a stone Calvary group from 1862 stands in front of it. The main altar features an early Baroque painting of St. Roch and St. Sebastian, dating from the second half of the 17th century. The church, outdoor group, and altarpiece each add a distinct period to the story.
Educational trails, views, and geological features
The Hřebeč Mining Trails form a 70-kilometre network of educational hiking trails suitable for walkers and cyclists. For wayfinding and breaks, the network has 22 educational stops, 40 signposts, eight starting points, and six rest areas. It leads to the Strážný vrch lookout tower, the tourist shelters on Mladějovský vrch and at U vysílače, and several mines in the area. These destinations offer different reasons to choose a route: viewpoints, places to rest, and mining-related features each provide a different focus.
The freely accessible Strážný vrch lookout tower stands in the woods. From there, views extend across the northern part of the Boskovice Furrow, including Moravská Třebová and the Pastýřka lookout tower; the Zábřeh Highlands, including the lookout tower on Lázka; and the Podorlicko region, including Lanškroun. Parts of the Orlické Mountains, including Suchý vrch and Buková hora, are also visible; in good visibility, the view reaches as far as Králický Sněžník. The weather and visibility determine how much of this panorama can actually be seen. A route description published in 2025 identifies the easiest access as the 2.5-kilometre route from the Kunčina, Nová Ves, točna bus stop via the Hřebeč Mining Trails. Check this route information locally before setting out.
The Pod skálou geological site can be reached from the road via a walkable tourist trail and lies more than 250 metres from the road. The condition of the trail can vary with the seasons, so check it before your visit. The site is also distinguished by its plant life: European yew grows naturally in beech stands, and rare heat-loving plants grow on exposed rock outcrops. In this respect, the site differs both from the churches and monuments and from the viewpoints.
The topics covered offer different points of interest to help you plan your trip: churches and sculptures highlight architectural history and monument design, while the trail network connects viewpoints, places to rest, and mines. Pod skálou adds geological and botanical features to this selection. This can help you decide whether Kunčina is the right place for the kind of discovery that matters most to you during your stay.
