Víska u Jevíčka combines a distinctive local history with a prominent viewpoint overlooking the village and the surrounding landscape. When choosing a destination, you can consider three specific questions separately: Would you like to take in the landscape views, are you interested in the history of the former labour camp, and does arriving without a railway line through the village fit your plans?
Views over the village and landscape
The tower above the fire station is a prominent viewpoint overlooking Víska u Jevíčka and the surrounding landscape. The views make the landscape a distinct part of choosing the village; they complement, rather than replace, learning about the camp and its memorial history. When choosing the village, you can therefore weigh whether the views or the historical remembrance matter more to you.
The labour camp and wartime history
A wartime labour camp was established northwest of Víska u Jevíčka, on the slope of the Arnoštovský stream valley. The former camp was located on the road from Víska u Jevíčka—formerly Derflík—to Chornice. It initially housed civilian workers involved in building a motorway. In spring 1940, Polish Jews were also brought there; after the attack on the Soviet Union, Soviet prisoners of war were added.
In 1942, 142 Soviet prisoners of war died of typhus in the former camp; they were buried in a special cemetery in the Kalenky forest. The camp site itself was later cleared.
Memorial and forest cemetery
The memorial and forest cemetery for 143 prisoners are listed as immovable cultural heritage. Both are located in a forest west of Víska u Jevíčka. Since 7 October 1951, the memorial has commemorated the place where those who died in a typhus epidemic were buried. It was reconstructed in 2006 with financial support from the Pardubický kraj. The history of remembrance can thus be traced through two specific milestones: the memorial, which has commemorated the site since 1951, and its reconstruction in 2006.
Arriving without a railway line through the village
No railway line runs through Víska u Jevíčka. The ČD line No. 262 runs east of the village; stations are located in Jevíčko, Biskupice u Jevíčka and Chornice. If you plan to travel by train, check the current connections and timetables for the stations mentioned before making specific plans.
Víska u Jevíčka has no dedicated cycle paths, nor is there a registered cycle route. On the main road and local streets, cyclists share the road with other traffic. If you plan to cycle, take shared road use into account when choosing your route and check the current traffic situation before setting off.
