Horní Heřmanice offers two very different starting points for a stay: a religious site with a Baroque history of construction and details spanning several centuries, as well as routes for cycling and hiking. There is also evidence of local folk architecture and, when conditions are right, winter activities. When planning, first consider whether you want to focus on cultural history, outdoor activities or a mix of both. This will also help you search more specifically for a hotel in Horní Heřmanice.

Church of St. George and religious site

The church complex, including the cemetery gate and chapel, is a protected cultural monument. The Church of St. George itself is a single-nave Baroque monument, built by Antonio Sala from 1708 to 1712. These dates provide a context for viewing its furnishings: the baptismal font, featuring a carving depicting the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan, was made in 1749. The main altar features a copy of the pilgrimage image Chrudimský Salvátor.

The other monuments also have their own points of reference in time and place. Near the church and rectory stands a statue of St. John of Nepomuk dating from 1767. A late Baroque crucifix in the religious complex commemorates a later period, dating from 1788. The ossuary is listed as an immovable cultural monument. Taken together, these features let you distinguish between the history of the church building, its furnishings and the individual objects in its surroundings, rather than attributing every detail to a single phase of construction.

Wooden buildings and local folk architecture

Local architecture includes well-maintained wooden cottages, considered examples of folk architecture. One notable example is the old wooden water mill, No. 103. Ferdinand Dittrich, brother of Heřmanice’s first parish priest, built it in 1748. The mill is regarded as an important example of folk architecture in the Lanškroun area.

Country house No. 85 tells a different story of construction: it is a copy of an example of the foothills’ log-house architecture from the Lanškroun area, dating back to 1792. Its model features a decorated gable. After the building was damaged in 2006, it was reconstructed as a copy of the original house. When exploring local architectural history, it is therefore worth distinguishing between the historical model and the later reconstruction. The mill, cottages and country house represent different forms of wooden architecture; they are not interchangeable examples of the same building type.

Cycling, hiking and winter options

Two marked cycling routes pass through Horní Heřmanice: CT 4225 runs from Tatenice via Horní Heřmanice to Výprachtice, and CT 4253 from Čenkovice via Horní Heřmanice to Verměřovice. The green-marked Lázek–Horní Heřmanice–Buková hora hiking route also passes through the village. These are distinct route options, each with its own markings and course. Check the signs and current trail conditions before setting out.

The ridge trail through the Bukovohorská Mountains passes through the upper part of Horní Heřmanice. It offers year-round views of Bohemia and the Moravian side; trail conditions may vary seasonally. As another point of reference, road I/43 runs through Horní Heřmanice, connecting Lanškroun with Štíty.

For winter, a municipal notice updated on February 5, 2026, lists a 1 km cross-country ski trail near the sports field. If snow and weather conditions allow, it is groomed twice a week. Before a winter trip, check whether conditions allow it to be groomed. There is also a small ski lift in the centre, particularly suitable for young people. Check that it is operating for the season before your trip.

Tailor your stay

If you are mainly interested in architectural and local history, the church, religious complex, water mill and wooden buildings offer a range of topics to explore. For more active days, consider the marked cycling routes and hiking trails; in winter, weather-dependent activities are also available. The differences are specific: two cycling routes with distinct connections are listed, while for hiking you can choose between a green-marked route and the ridge trail, with its year-round views. The cross-country ski trail and ski lift, on the other hand, depend on suitable conditions or require checking that they are operating for the season.
