Horní Heřmanice in Bohemia lies on the Bohemian-Moravian border, below the easternmost foothills of the Orlické Mountains. Its scenic setting goes hand in hand with practical opportunities: a high-altitude hiking trail runs through the upper part of the village, a green-marked trail points to two summit destinations, and a cycling route passes through Horní Heřmanice. The village’s architectural history offers another focus, from its sacred complex to examples of folk architecture.

Hiking between viewpoints and summit destinations

The high-altitude hiking trail through the Bukovohorská Mountains runs through the upper part of Horní Heřmanice. All year round, it offers beautiful views towards Bohemia and the Moravian side. The border landscape itself is therefore part of the hiking experience, with views in two different geographical directions. If you prefer to plan around a specific summit destination, you can follow the green-marked hiking trail.

This trail leads south to the summit of Lázek, at an altitude of 714 metres, and north to the summit of Buková hora, at 958 metres. You can distinguish the two directions by compass point and summit height: Lázek is lower, while Buková hora is higher. This lets you choose your preferred destination first, rather than treating both hikes as a single route. Check the trail markings again on site.

Another way to explore the village

There is also a specific route for cyclists: marked cycle route 4253 passes through Horní Heřmanice. It offers a different way to find your bearings from the hiking trails, with their viewpoints and summit destinations. Check the signs and route on site before planning your ride.

Timber houses and rural architectural history

Well-kept timber houses illustrate the local folk architecture. Another example is the Výměnek: a surviving remnant of a former rural farmstead dating from the 19th century, and evidence of traditional folk architecture in the Ústí nad Orlicí area. The two descriptions highlight different aspects: well-kept timber houses as a feature of local character, and a specific remnant of a farmstead with a connection to regional history. Visitors interested in architectural forms will therefore find more than a single period or building to explore.

The St. George sacred complex

The entire St. George church complex, including the cemetery gate and chapel, is designated as a cultural monument. The church itself is High Baroque and was built between 1708 and 1712. The rural sacred complex also includes a brick Baroque ossuary dating from around 1700, making it somewhat earlier than the church’s construction. Further points in time are marked by the statue of St. John of Nepomuk near the church and rectory, dating from 1767, and the Late Baroque crucifix in the sacred grounds, from 1788. Together, these dates provide a timeline for the different buildings and works of art without reducing them to a single period of origin.
