Prosetín combines a long history of settlement with a landscape in which granite provides a distinctive thematic focus. The geosite lies in the eastern part of the Železné hory National Geopark; the surroundings are hilly and characterised by rounded elevations. There are also numerous abandoned and flooded quarries, which have become a natural feature of the landscape around Prosetín. Two different themes therefore stand out for travellers: the geological context and the history of granite quarrying. The village centre adds specific places of remembrance to this focus, while the nearby educational trail explores a separate historical theme.
Granite and Geology in the Geopark
The rocks around Prosetín belong to the Železné hory plutonic complex. The rock exposed at the geosite is generally referred to as “Skuteč granite”. The open quarry at the site offers a glimpse into the core of the magmatic body of the Nasavrky Pluton. The terms refer to two different scales: “Skuteč granite” is the commonly used name for the exposed rock, while the Nasavrky Pluton is the larger magmatic context.
One striking detail is pyrite, or iron sulfide. At the site, it forms radiating aggregates on joints under tensile stress, resembling depictions of the sun. This form links a specific mineral to its geological setting and adds a precise detail to the site’s story. Together with the abandoned and flooded quarries, it creates a thematic arc from the formation of the rock to the landscape shaped by quarrying.
Educational Trail and Route Planning
There are no marked hiking trails running through the municipal area of Prosetín. The “Stopy Ležácké tragédie” educational trail lies nearby, northwest of the municipality. It follows the traces of resistance and the tragic events in Ležáky during the Second World War. The trail opened to visitors in 2010, is 13 kilometres long and has eight stops. When planning your trip, it is worth clearly distinguishing between the municipal area and this nearby route. Check the route details against current hiking maps before your trip. Its length and number of stops give you concrete points of reference for deciding whether the educational trail suits your stay.
Local History and Places of Remembrance
The first written mention of Prosetín dates from 1445 and referred mainly to the two settlements of Prasetín and Malý Prasetín. The local granite industry is also part of the village’s history: the construction of the Pardubice–Německý Brod railway paved the way for it in Prosetín. The Holec quarry was one of the first granite quarries to open in the Železné hory Mountains.
The chapel is a prominent landmark in Prosetín. Its exterior is entirely new, while its interior furnishings are old. At the centre, next to a chapel on the road between Prosetín and Skuteč, there is an information board. A large erratic boulder in the village centre serves as a memorial to the fallen. Together, these places point to different aspects of local history: the chapel’s architecture, the information board and the memorial in the centre.
