On a hill in Moravičany stands the listed complex of St. George’s Church. A 74-kilometre cycling tour passes through the town, and the Moravičanské jezero nature reserve is nearby. When planning, you can weigh up sacred architectural history, a specific cycling route and an ornithological nature theme.
Getting here and cycling tour
Moravičany railway station is on railway line 270 and provides domestic passenger services, including seat reservations. Check the current timetable and services offered before setting off.
The “Projížďka Litovelským Pomoravím” cycling tour is 74 kilometres long and passes through Moravičany. From Mohelnice, it follows a cycle path into the town and through it. At the edge of town, there are two options: a route through the forest or a cycle path to Doubravice. At this point, the route offers a clear choice between the two specified options. As route conditions may change, it is advisable to check the current route before setting off.
St. George’s Church and sacred art
The listed complex of St. George is on a hill within the municipality. It comprises the church, a bell tower, an enclosing wall with a gate and a sandstone pulpit. Below the church, at the southeastern foot of the hill, is a separate parish area. The spatial arrangement, with the church on the hill and the parish area below, is one of the complex’s distinctive features.
You can also encounter a variety of sacred architectural and artistic forms outside the church complex. The Marian column with the Christ Child dates from 1703; this valuable early Baroque sculpture has been protected as a cultural monument since 1964. Another stop is the Chapel of St. Florian: it was built around 1713 and reconstructed in 1945.
The interior decoration of the Chapel of St. Florian features frescoes by Petr Herzig. They depict important buildings in Moravičany and St. Florian extinguishing a burning roof. The chapel thus links its architectural history with imagery relating to the town and the saint. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity makes a different architectural statement: the small masonry building dates from 1833 and is classified as folk architecture.
The ensemble of the Virgin Mary, St. Florian and St. John of Nepomuk is dated to 1676; other dates place it as late as the mid-18th century. It has been protected as a cultural monument since 1964. For orientation, the ensemble is on the road to Doubravice, immediately beyond the bridge over the Třebůvka, on the left-hand side. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity stands at the edge of town on the road to Doubravice, opposite an industrial facility.
Nature reserve nearby
The important ornithological nature reserve Moravičanské jezero is located near Moravičany. It covers 92.15 hectares. This offers a nature-focused attraction alongside the town’s sacred buildings. If you plan activities in the area, check the applicable conservation regulations beforehand.
Plan your stay
When looking for accommodation in Moravičany, it helps to consider where the sights are located: the church complex and the sacred buildings described here are in the town, the cycling tour passes through it, and the nature reserve is nearby. You can plan your overnight stay according to whether architectural history, the 74-kilometre cycling tour or the ornithological nature theme is your priority.
