Bludov offers several different perspectives: a Neoclassical pilgrimage site, architectural and art history, and the Bludovská stráň educational trail. When planning, it helps to distinguish the hike, for which an approximate duration is given, from visits that require arranging in advance or checking opening hours. This lets you plan culture, scenery and the various attractions according to your interests and the time available.
Pilgrimage Site and Religious Art
The Boží Tělo complex is a Neoclassical pilgrimage site. It includes the Church of Boží Tělo, the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, a wayside shrine, the Stonův Cross and the Stations of the Cross. The complex therefore brings together different forms of religious art rather than focusing on a single church building. St George’s Church offers another point of interest for art history: its 1895 ceiling paintings were created using an industrial painting technique considered unique throughout Moravia.
The Žerotín Crypt is next to St George’s Church. The remains of Karel the Elder of Žerotín rest there. Visits are possible by prior arrangement, so arrange your visit in advance.
The Castle and Traces of History
Bludov Castle was probably built around the middle of the 13th century. In 1471, it was captured and destroyed by Matthias Corvinus; its ruins lie on Hradisko Hill near Zámeček. The Bludov Castle orangery is another historical highlight: it is among the oldest surviving orangeries in North Moravia and the Czech Republic. Cultural events are held in the hall of Bludov Castle. The castle interior can be visited on a few occasions; if you are considering an interior visit, check in advance whether a suitable opportunity is available.
Circular Trail and Scenery
The Bludovská stráň educational trail is a 4.5 km circular route. At a leisurely pace, allow around 2 to 2.5 hours. The circular route is accessible from the U zámku car park, which also has a bus stop, and from Bludov railway station. Check local information about access points before travelling.
Bludovská stráň also refers to a wooded slope about 3 km long. It was registered as a significant landscape feature on 20 June 1995. The two lengths refer to different things: 4.5 km is the length of the circular route, while about 3 km is the length of the slope. This distinction helps separate the route’s distance from the extent of the landscape feature.
More Nature and Attractions
Gryngle Nature Park provides a habitat for numerous bird species, including rare tawny owls. Beach volleyball can be played at the Vlčí důl natural swimming pool. A natural healing spring with sulfate-chloride-sodium-type mineral thermal water rises on the grounds of Lázně Bludov.
Pradědovo dětské muzeum is considered the first regional children’s museum in the Czech Republic. It is suitable in any weather and open year-round. As opening arrangements may change, check them before your visit. The attractions therefore differ in their planning requirements: an approximate walking time is given for the educational trail, while it is worth checking the museum’s current opening arrangements.
