Velké Hoštice brings together several clearly distinct themes: late Baroque buildings, an extensive landscaped park, a cycling route, and bus and train connections with neighbouring municipalities and towns. This makes it possible to consider the town both from a cultural and historical perspective and as part of a cycling trip. When planning a holiday apartment, the first question is whether you want to focus on architecture and local history or include Cycling Route No. 55 in your travel plans.

Late Baroque architectural history and the castle park

The Church of St John the Baptist was built in 1773 to a design by Jakub Pánek. It is a monumental late Baroque religious building with a two-towered façade. Frescoes by Franz Anton Sebastini have been preserved inside: the exterior and the frescoes show two different aspects of the church. The castle also bears the imprint of the late Baroque. It was converted into a late Baroque noble residence in the second half of the 18th century.

The extensive castle park was laid out as a landscaped park at the end of the 18th century or the beginning of the 19th century. Compared with the architectural history of the castle, its date therefore reaches into the early 19th century. Velké Hoštice thus offers more than a single building for a cultural and historical visit: it encompasses different forms and periods, including the castle’s conversion, the church and the designed parkland.

Chapels and the village square

The chapels also add to the picture, differing in both form and date. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary dates from the second half of the 18th century. The Chapel of Corpus Christi, by contrast, belongs to the second half of the 19th century: it has a semicircular ground plan and is set into the boundary wall near the church. This comparison takes you from an 18th-century chapel to a building with an unusual ground plan from the following century.

There is also a Baroque statue of St John of Nepomuk in the village square. Together with the church and chapels, it extends the view of religious art to a work in a public space. Those interested in architecture and religious art will find several distinct forms: the monumental church, the two chapels and the statue in the village square.

Border history and archaeological finds

An infantry bunker that can be visited in Velké Hoštice formed part of the fortifications along the Czechoslovak border. Alongside the castle and religious architecture, it brings the history of border fortifications into view. The castle housed an exhibition about archaeological excavations in the cadastral area of the municipality. If you would like to include this particular exhibition in your plans, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

Cycling route and travel connections

Cycling Route No. 55, the “Silesian Highway”, runs between Krnov, Opava and Velké Hoštice. For a cycling trip, it provides a specific connection to the town, distinct from a stay focused on architectural history. Bus and train connections also link Velké Hoštice with neighbouring municipalities and towns. Check the timetables that apply to your travel date for your journey there and onward.

Plan your stay around your interests

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Velké Hoštice, you can start by organising your stay around its focus: the castle, church, chapels and statue represent different cultural and historical themes, while the cycling route offers a separate direction for planning. Consider which of these perspectives is most important for your trip, and plan your journey accordingly.
