The history of the castle, church architecture and nature trails give Hradec nad Moravicí a variety of facets. The castle’s development makes a good starting point: what began as a Gothic Přemyslid castle became first a Renaissance, then a Baroque and finally an Empire-style castle. This sequence of styles makes the architectural development across several eras a common thread for a visit.

Castle Complex and Architectural History

The castle complex includes the White Castle, the White Tower and a gate at the Neo-Gothic Red Castle. The main tour covers the reception rooms and the interiors of the princely apartment. Opening dates may vary; check the tour dates before your visit.

Another glimpse of the local heritage is St. Peter and Paul’s Church. It dates from the 16th century and was consecrated in 1597. The 37-meter-high church tower has three bells, considered the oldest in the Opava region.

Park and Nature Trails

The castle park covers around 130 hectares and is one of the largest landscape parks in Silesia. A dedicated educational trail about the castle is 277.9 meters long. Along it are four rest stops with wooden benches, waste bins and information boards. The trail is open year-round and free of charge; it can be reached on foot via several entrances from the surrounding roads. Check access conditions before your trip.

The town’s educational trail consists of 21 stops. Its route runs from the railway station past the state castle and the Stations of the Cross on Kalvaria to the cemetery. Twelve stops are in the town, and nine in its outlying districts. This sequence of stops distinguishes the trail from the 277.9-meter educational trail about the castle.

Forest, Views and Nature Watching

The Bukový chodník leads through quiet stretches of forest and offers views of Hanuše, Žimrovice and the distant horizon. Rare plants and animals can be spotted along the way. This makes it a good option for anyone who would like to include forest landscapes and nature watching alongside architectural history during their stay.

In Žimrovice, the Za školou educational trail offers insights into the geology, flora and fauna of the Meleček Valley. Eight stops are devoted to these subjects. The trail complements nature watching along the Bukový chodník with a focus specifically on the landscape and natural life of the valley.

The Šance observation tower stands at an elevation of 522 meters on the outskirts of Jakubčovice, a district of Hradec nad Moravicí. From there, the view extends over the Opava region, the Jeseníky Mountains and the Beskids. The observation tower and the adjacent sunbathing area are open year-round and free of charge; observe the safety restrictions posted on site.

Seasonal Tour of the Weisshuhn Canal

Guided tours of the Weisshuhn Canal are offered from April to October; dates may change. So check the specific dates before your visit. The tour includes a tasting of what workers in the paper mills ate and drank. The content of the tour may be adjusted.
