A Baroque church, an exceptionally well-preserved castle and a museum with around 160 historical washing mechanisms give Hošťálkovy a distinctive cultural and historical character. Archaeological traces add to this, ranging from castle remains to a preserved settlement layout. If you are considering Hošťálkovy as a destination, you can choose between architectural history, evidence of everyday life and routes around the municipality.

Church, Castle and Evidence of Everyday Life

The Church of St Michael the Archangel stands in the northern part of Hošťálkovy. It was built between 1790 and 1792 as a single-nave Baroque church. Its projecting western tower façade is topped with an onion dome—a distinctive detail of its exterior appearance.

Hošťálkovy Castle is another of the town’s notable historic buildings. In the Bruntál District, it is considered exceptionally well preserved and is listed as a cultural monument. A quatrefoil-shaped fountain stands in the castle courtyard. It originally bore a cast-iron statue of Bacchus, which is now inside the castle.

Another testament to history is the Skrbenský tomb in the cemetery by the parish church. This rare surviving regional noble tomb is associated with the Skrbenský family, who once owned land here. It consists of two low marble sarcophagi for Kryštof and Kateřina Skrbenský, dating from 1686. The Museum of Historical Washing Machines and Washboards in Hošťálkovy–Vraclávek offers a different perspective on the past: its unique collection includes about 160 washing mechanisms dating from 1850 to 1950.

Castle Remains and Historic Settlement Layout

Luginsland, in the Vraclávek cadastral area of the municipality of Hošťálkovy, is designated an important archaeological site. The castle remains there are from a castle believed to have been founded around the middle of the 13th century as a base for colonisation. A rampart and ditch surround the remains; the castle’s founding period and purpose should be regarded as probable, not certain.

Another archaeological trace runs along the Kobylí potok between Staré Purkartice and Hošťálkovy. This medieval and early modern site preserves the field pattern of a settlement in the southwest of the cadastral area, believed to date from the colonisation period. Hošťálkovy also preserves the historic layout of a Waldhufendorf, a linear forest-clearance village. A considerable number of valuable examples of folk architecture have survived. Together, these traces give the history of the locality a spatial dimension: it encompasses not only individual buildings, but also settlement traces and a traditional field pattern.

Hiking, Cycling and Landscape

The built-up area of Hošťálkovy lies in the valley of the Kobylí potok, which divides the settlement into two parts. The protected zone of the Krasovský kotel Nature Reserve extends into the Vraclávek and Staré Purkartice cadastral areas. These details describe different aspects of the municipality’s geography: the valley in the built-up area and the extent of a protected zone across two cadastral areas.

Two marked hiking trails and a nature trail cross the municipality. For cyclists, the 79-kilometre Krnovská padesátka cycling route passes through Hošťálkovy and Vraclávek. Vraclávek also has the developed Traily Kotel mountain-bike trail system. The routes therefore differ in activity and character: marked hiking trails and a nature trail on one hand, and a longer cycling route and a mountain-bike trail system on the other.

Getting There and Choosing the Focus of Your Stay

Public transport in Hošťálkovy is provided exclusively by buses. If you are planning to travel by public transport, it is worth checking suitable bus connections and their timetables. The Krásné Loučky–Karlovice road crosses the Hošťálkovy area from west to east.

You can choose a clear focus for your visit: the church, castle, tomb, museum and archaeological traces offer different ways to explore the past, while the hiking trails, nature trail and cycling options provide a distinct selection of activities in the municipality.
