Dolni Moravice offers a clear mix of local history, individual works of art and architecture, and a designated cycling loop. The observation tower, river, and mining district add further specific points of interest.
Local History and Architecture
The history of Dolni Moravice is mentioned as early as 1258. The filial church of St. James the Elder dates from 1795. Its presbytery dates from the Renaissance, while its tower dates from 1593. This means that a single church building has several points of reference in time: the dates do not all apply to the same part of the building.
The Baroque column monuments are another trace of the area's art history. In the center of town stands a sandstone column depicting the Holy Trinity. The monument dates from 1752 and is considered particularly distinctive in the region, both iconographically and typologically. This assessment concerns both the subject depicted and the type of monument.
On the southern edge of Dolni Moravice, a Baroque sandstone statue of the Immaculata, dated 1764, stands on a tall column. The two works differ in subject and location: the depiction of the Trinity is in the center, while the Immaculata is on the southern edge of town. A stone road bridge also crosses the Moravice: it has two arches, and its distinctly rising roadway is characteristic of bridges of the so-called Swedish type.
Landscape, Views, and Mining
Dolni Moravice is part of the Jeseníky Protected Landscape Area. By the Moravice River, near the village square and the road from Rýmařov to Karlova Studánka, there is a covered spring at the source of the Moravická kyselka. The river, village square, and road are the specific landmarks for this spot.
The Nová Ves observation tower is 31.3 meters high and was built in 2014. It offers three views of the Hrubý Jeseník ridge. Its height, year of construction, and named view give this lookout a different focus from the town's architectural and artistic history.
The mine workings in the Nová Ves mining district are not accessible. Only extensive spoil heaps of extracted material can be visited; they are now heavily overgrown with forest. Those interested in mining heritage will therefore find the spoil heaps as accessible remains, not the underground mine workings.
Cycling Loop and Practical Planning
The Dolní Moravice–Nová Ves–Valšov cycling loop and back is 36.3 kilometers long and can be accessed directly from Dolni Moravice. Bike buses stop there during the summer season. The loop is therefore a different planning option from the individual places of interest in town: it has a specific stated length, while the church, column monuments, and bridge each offer their own subject for a visit.
Road and trail conditions can change, so check the latest conditions before setting out. Also check whether the seasonal bike buses are running during your travel dates. This lets you weigh cycling plans separately from the other sightseeing options, without assuming a particular order for your stay.
