The church in Dolní Václavov combines a medieval history with a baroque building from the 18th century. Nearby, other perspectives come into view: forest trails along the Kočovský potok and a marked trail to the former volcano Uhlířský vrch. The range of themes thus extends from sacred architecture and protected natural features to trails with different destinations. Anyone planning a stay can focus on these aspects according to their own interests.

Church and Building History

The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary (“Kostel Neposkvrněného početí Panny Marie”) is a baroque building dating from 1754–1755. It was built on the site of an older medieval wooden church. The sequence distinguishes the wooden predecessor from the later church building; the dates refer to the baroque building. Since 1958, the church has been a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Its building history can therefore be divided into two phases: the medieval predecessor church and the building from the mid-18th century.

The interior includes richly carved altars with white finishes and typical gilding. Ornamental frescoes are located on two arch bands between the vaults of the nave. These features have different emphases: the altars foreground carving and finish, while the frescoes emphasize ornament and their position within the church. The building’s history and furnishings thus offer different perspectives on the same church.

Other Protected Features

The protected large-leaved linden “Lípa v Dolním Václavově” is located in the cadastral area of Dolní Václavov. As a natural feature, it complements the architectural history themes with another kind of protected heritage: here, the subject is a tree, not a building or its furnishings. The shift from the church to the linden expands the view of Dolní Václavov with a distinct connection to nature.

The municipality of Václavov u Bruntálu is also home to a baroque sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk on a simple granite pedestal. A chronogram dates the statue to 1735. Unlike the church, the focus here is on a single figure. Sandstone and the granite pedestal bring together two materials, while the chronogram establishes a specific date.

Trails in the Surrounding Area

Forest trails lead from Dolní Václavov along the Kočovský potok to Moravskoslezský Kočov. The stream provides a clear landscape reference for the route, while the named destination gives it a local direction. This type of route differs from a marked hiking trail that leads north from Moravskoslezský Kočov to Uhlířský vrch.

Uhlířský vrch is a former volcano standing 672 metres high. A small church stands at its summit. At this destination, the former volcano and the church at the summit bring landscape and architecture together. The marked trail’s northerly direction and named destination give it a different character from the forest trails along the Kočovský potok.

For planning purposes, the routes can be distinguished by their different starting points and destinations: the forest trails lead from Dolní Václavov along the stream to Moravskoslezský Kočov. From there, the marked hiking trail leads north to the former volcano. This offers two separate options: a route alongside a stream and a trail toward a named natural and cultural destination.
