The Karlov Ski Arena brings a strong winter focus; nature and local history reveal other sides of Malá Morávka. When planning your trip, consider the different offerings according to your interests and the season.
Skiing in Karlov
The Karlov Ski Arena has six blue runs with gentle slopes. Three ski schools with professional instructors are available for children and adults. Evening skiing also has its own appeal: it features two express chairlifts and 5,300 metres of illuminated ski runs. Run configurations may change from season to season; evening operations depend on the season and conditions. Ski school operators and availability may also change. Before travelling, check which offerings are currently available.
Nature trails and protected areas
The Velká kotlina nature trail starts in Karlov pod Pradědem and follows the Moravice River through the Praděd National Nature Reserve. Its eleven stops cover botany, zoology and geology. Routes through the protected area may be subject to seasonal restrictions, so check the current situation before setting out.
Another option is Kolem Ježkova Lesa: the 1.5-kilometre route is intended for young children and families, as well as walkers, cyclists and mountain scooter riders. It starts in the car park at the valley station of the Karlov Ski Express; parking rules may change. The two routes differ in focus: Velká kotlina passes through a nature reserve and has themed stops, while Kolem Ježkova Lesa is described by its length and intended user groups.
Javorový vrch in Malá Morávka is one of the five most important wintering areas in the Czech Republic for the western barbastelle (Barbastella barbastellus), the greater mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis) and the lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros). A regional notice dated 8 March 2021 describes the Javorový vrch Site of European Importance as closed to the public. Before travelling, check whether this restriction is still in effect.
Church and mining history
The new parish Church of the Holy Trinity in Malá Morávka was completed in 1793 and solemnly consecrated on 22 October of the same year. The mining history of Javorový vrch goes back further: Devonian iron ore was mined there from approximately the 13th century until 1870. Together, the church and mines provide two specific historical points of interest that shed light on different periods in the area’s history.
Borůvkové hody and blueberry specialities
The recurring Borůvkové hody festival takes place in Malá Morávka, Karlov pod Pradědem and the surrounding area. During the festival, a free “Borůvková linka” shuttle connects the official restaurants in Malá Morávka and Karlov pod Pradědem. This service is part of the festival and is not a permanent public transport service. Festival offerings include fresh chilled blueberries, blueberry beer, blueberry dumplings and blueberry cake. Dishes and dates may vary from one edition to the next; check the details for the specific festival.
