In Zahrádky, you can explore nature and history from a range of different perspectives. Several hiking and cycling trails pass through the area; there are also natural attractions, cultural monuments and traditional half-timbered architecture. So the first decision in planning your trip comes down to your interests: would you like to focus more on landforms and plant and animal life, or are you more drawn to architectural history and historical landmarks? The following themes offer concrete ideas without prescribing a fixed itinerary.

Nature: valley, pond and birdlife

One striking natural feature is Peklo, a geologically valuable, gorge-like valley of the Robečský potok in sandstone. It provides a habitat for rare and endangered plant and animal species, including a large population of spring snowflakes. Here, both the shape of the valley and its wildlife take centre stage. At Peklo, geology and habitat come together in a single way of looking at the landscape.

Another highlight is Novozámecký rybník, a national nature reserve associated with rare bird species and a unique drainage channel cut through the rocks. The fishpond was created during the reign of Charles IV; a birdwatching station and an observation walkway were built there in 2013. This brings together the history of the pond, birdlife and an unusual rock-cut channel. By contrast, Peklo is defined by its gorge-like sandstone valley and rare plant and animal species, while Novozámecký rybník centres on the water, birds and channel. This distinction can help you decide which nature themes to prioritise based on landform, wildlife and historical origins.

Cultural history and architectural styles

Cultural history also offers clear points of reference. The complex of St. Barbara’s Church includes walls, a cemetery, a bell tower, a staircase and statues, and has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958. The church is also the only surviving part of the village of Mnichov, which was destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War. At St. Barbara’s, therefore, the history of a preserved church complex meets that of a vanished village. If you are interested in historic sites, you will encounter not only a building complex but also the history of a settlement that no longer exists.

Zahrádky Castle burned down in January 2003. The many examples of traditional half-timbered architecture offer a different way to explore the area’s building traditions. Half-timbering is a construction method using a load-bearing timber frame; this architecture can therefore be explored as a distinct theme alongside the religious complex. A statue of St. Starost, dating from 1705, stands between Jestřebí and Zahrádky. It adds a separate, precisely dated point of reference to the architectural history.

Planning hiking and cycling routes

Zahrádky lies on several hiking and cycling trails. This means you can make outdoor activity a separate focus alongside nature or cultural history. Check the conditions on your chosen route before setting out, as they may change. The trails offer another way to shape your plans: you can focus your stay more on hiking or cycling and give the historical or landscape-related themes a corresponding emphasis.
