The Romanesque-Gothic core of the Upper Castle and wall paintings from 1778 show how many centuries of history can be read in Theusing. Alongside the castle complex, churches, a trail covering nature and cultural topics, and evidence of the region’s pilgrimage history shape the way visitors see the town and its surroundings. These different highlights let you plan your stay around architectural history, landscapes or regional culture.
Castle history across several building phases
The Toužim castle complex comprises the Upper and Lower Castles, the manor brewery and part of the west wing of the farmyard. The Upper Castle retains a Romanesque-Gothic core that originated in the residential building of the provost’s house and became the keep of a noble castle after 1437. Its building history thus spans the provost’s residential building and its later role as a defensive tower in a noble castle. The castle complex also documents the city’s architectural development and its earliest urban development. Visitors interested in how urban structures took shape will find more here than a single architectural detail: the site brings together several named buildings and a traceable historical development.
Church art and historic buildings
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was built at the end of the 15th century as part of TouĹľim’s town fortifications. It preserves a Gothic north tower and a Baroque side chapel dedicated to Christ in His Passion, dating from 1699. Inside the church are wall paintings by J. J. KramolĂn from 1778. The dates make the different building and artistic phases clear: the late medieval church was followed by the Baroque chapel and, later, the wall paintings. The Marian Column is also one of TouĹľim’s notable historic monuments. Together, these features offer a distinct focus for travelers who want to explore sacred architecture and art as well as the history of the castle.
A trail between nature and culture
The St. Blaise educational trail is about 3 km long. Part of it follows a maintained farm track, while other sections cross meadows; the final third runs along a paved road. The stops explain natural features, historical contexts, population movements, traditional crafts and cultural monuments. The trail runs in the area around BlaĹľejskĂ˝ Pond near NeĹľichov and lies within a Natura 2000 network site. If you plan to walk it, check local access conditions and the state of the paths in advance; surfaces may change.
Pilgrimage history and regional orientation
The chapel near Lachovice, in the TouĹľim area, is part of the region’s historic pilgrimage landscape. It lies on a historic pilgrimage route regularly used by processions from TouĹľim, Ăštvina and OtroÄŤĂn on their way to the Pilgrimage Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Skoky. These processions are recorded as a historical practice; this does not mean that they take place today. Another connection is named by the Skokovská Trail, which links TouĹľim with Skoky. To understand these routes, it is important to consider the named routes separately from their respective historical associations.
In Prachomety near Toužim, an information board in the village square provides information about the Střela River and the history of the village. The source of the Střela is also marked in Prachomety near Toužim. If it is on private property, it may be visited only with the owners’ permission. The information in the village square and the conditional access to the source are therefore two distinct points of reference for finding your way around the area.
