In Landeck (Otročín), local history and nature come together. Five mineral springs, a neoclassical church and named cycling routes offer a variety of highlights. The village lies within the Slavkov Forest Protected Landscape Area, amid hilly, wooded countryside in the northwestern part of the Tepelská vrchovina highlands. When planning your visit, you can focus on the history of the springs, architecture, cycling or a walk.

Mineral springs with a long history

There are five mineral springs in the territory of Otročín. The Horní otročínský pramen has been known since at least the 17th century and has been used since then. This spring therefore has two different points in time associated with it: its use dates back a long way, while a specific date is visible on its enclosure.

The spring is enclosed 70 centimetres below ground by a hollow tree trunk marked with the year 1819. The year refers to the marked trunk; the spring itself has been known since at least the 17th century. Check the local condition of the spring enclosure before visiting. This way, both its historical use and the practical detail of the installation can be part of your plans.

Local history and the church

The first historical mention of Otročín dates to 1233. At that time, the Chapel of St. Michael and the settlement of Otročín passed into the ownership of Teplá Monastery. This early reference concerns the chapel and the settlement; the Church of St. Michael (Kostel sv. Michaela) dates from 1838. This makes it possible to distinguish the history of the village from the architectural history of the church.

Kostel sv. Michaela is a single-nave neoclassical church and is listed in the Czech Republic’s State Register of Immovable Cultural Monuments. Its tower is 34 metres high. The oldest surviving item of interior furnishings is an ornately decorated baptismal font. Its architectural style, height and furnishings offer different points of interest if you are interested in sacred architecture or preserved church furnishings.

Cycling and walking

The Cesta z města 5 cycling route runs through Toužim, Otročín, Teplá, Teplá Monastery, Vidžín and Prachomety, before returning to Toužim. The full route is 42 kilometres long. It is described as a specific circular ride, with named places and an overall distance. The Euroegrensis cycling route also passes through Otročín; no route length is given here.

If you prefer walking, the Otročínské cesty nature trail starts in the settlement of Otročín. The stated walking time is one hour, and the terrain is considered easy. This makes the time needed to walk the trail a straightforward planning point alongside the longer cycling route. Check the local condition of the trail before setting out.

Agriculture and local traditions

Farma Otročín is an organic dairy farm in the Slavkov Forest Protected Landscape Area. The farm adds an agricultural dimension to the area’s nature and cultural attractions. Traditions maintained by local associations include the Otročínské slavnosti. The municipal strategic plan adopted on 20 December 2021 described them as a local tradition and envisaged their continuation. Alongside the lasting architectural and landscape features, local traditions are another distinct part of the destination.
