Sichlau can be explored through specific buildings and a cycling route. In Čichalov, there is the Gothic Church of All Saints and a Baroque village chapel; west of the village, the Čichalovský mlýn stands in a deep valley. The 32-kilometre Cesta z města 8 route also passes through Čichalov and other places on its way back to Žlutice. This brings three themes together when planning a trip: sacred architecture, the history of milling on the Malá Trasovka and cycling.
Churches and Chapels: Different Building Periods
The Church of All Saints in Čichalov was built in the Gothic style in the first half of the 14th century. It is considered a valuable example of sacred architecture from the time of Charles IV in the Žlutice area. The cemetery with the church is about one kilometre northeast of Čichalov, on higher ground.
The Baroque village chapel in Čichalov was built in the 17th century and is now dedicated to Saints John and Paul; it was originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Compared with the Gothic Church of All Saints, it dates from a distinctly later period. Its changing dedication adds a second historical aspect to the comparison of styles and periods.
The Mill and Marian Chapel in the Valley
The Čichalovský mlýn is a watermill on the left bank of the Malá Trasovka stream, in a deep valley about 1.1 kilometres west of Čichalov. The mill is first recorded on the map from the first Josephinian Military Survey, conducted between 1764 and 1768. The ruins of the Čichalovský mlýn are freely accessible; check the current conditions on site before visiting.
The locations help with orientation: the cemetery and Church of All Saints are northeast of the village on higher ground, while the mill site is west of it in the valley. They therefore have different geographical settings, even though both form part of Čichalov’s history.
At the entrance road to Čichalovský mlýn No. 29, master miller Wenzl Pleyer had a stone Marian chapel built in the second half of the 19th century. It is in the deep valley of the Malá Trasovka, about 1.1 kilometres west of Čichalov. This chapel should not be confused with the village chapel: the village chapel was originally dedicated to Mary, whereas the stone Marian chapel is a separate 19th-century building. Only the enclosure walls up to their original height remain of the former Marian chapel; the roof and roof structure are missing. It is currently in a dilapidated condition. Check its current condition on site before visiting.
