Around Warta (Stráž nad Ohří), geological features, historic buildings and a variety of trails come together. The natural monuments display different forms of volcanic rock, while the church and castles offer their own historical points of interest. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between a short circular trail, several possible routes to Horní Hrad and a cycling route through the Ohře Valley.

Geology and Landscape

The Malý Stolec Natural Monument is located in the cadastral area of Stráž nad Ohří. Its protected features include a preserved, unquarried basalt cap, partly quarried basalt columns, a block field and dry grassland. The protected natural features also include characteristic heat-loving flora and fauna. The protected features therefore encompass geological formations as well as open, dry areas and habitats for heat-loving species.

The Čedičová žíla Boč Natural Monument, in the surroundings of Warta, displays a different rock formation: an exposed basalt vein with pronounced columnar jointing. Its mostly hexagonal basalt columns are arranged in a fan shape. The rock vein can be reached on foot from Warta; the terrain is challenging. This access information is important when deciding whether to walk there and should be considered alongside the geological feature.

The Nebesa National Nature Reserve is also located in the surroundings of Warta. Its protected features include natural forests, an isolated population of Aesculapian snakes and Tertiary volcanic veins with columnar jointing. Malý Stolec, Čedičová žíla Boč and Nebesa thus represent different protected features: from basalt formations and dry grassland to a striking rock vein, forests, wildlife and volcanic structures.

Castles and Building History

The Church of St Michael the Archangel stands in Warta. It was built in 1768 using alms from pilgrims. The source of the funds is part of its building history and distinguishes the church from the surrounding castles, whose recorded origins are more closely connected with their locations and former functions.

Himlštejn Castle stands above the valley of the Pekelský potok. It was probably built before 1434 to defend the associated estate. The date is therefore an estimate. Horní Hrad, also known as Hauenštejn, is another nearby site: a castle and chateau dating from the 13th century. The two castle sites offer different historical points of reference: for Himlštejn, the presumed construction date and defensive purpose are recorded, while Horní Hrad is identified as a castle and chateau dating from the 13th century.

Trails and Practical Information

A circular trail just under two kilometres long, with eight stops, runs at Horní Hrad. The educational trail at Horní Hrad is suitable for school trips and families with children. Horní Hrad can be reached from Stráž nad Ohří railway station via three possible routes. The length and number of stops give a concrete idea of the circular trail; the three possible routes from the station answer a different question about getting there.

For cyclists, Route No. 6 runs from Kyselka through Vojkovice and Stráž nad Ohří along the Ohře Valley. The sequence of places helps to indicate its course. Also worth noting are several forest sections of the Ohře Cycle Route beyond Warta: they are unpaved and may be harder to ride after rain. Plan your route with these sections in mind and bear in mind that their condition depends on the weather.

The trail information varies in nature: the circular trail at Horní Hrad is described by its approximate length and number of stops, while for the cycling route, the main considerations are its course through several places and the condition of individual forest sections. When choosing Warta, you can weigh up your interests accordingly—for example, geological features, building history, or a route on foot or by bike.
