Kohoutov can be explored through its cultural heritage, a regular annual event and distinctive landscape features. The village is home to a protected church and a listed former school building with a ceramics studio; for route planning, there are several named cycling routes as well as the Naučná stezka hraničních kamenů educational trail. Wetlands and the Kladrubský potok add a distinctive natural feature. When deciding how to plan your trip, it helps to distinguish between these attractions: the festival takes place at a recurring date in August, while the cycling routes connect different places and the educational trail offers specific themed stops.
Church and Ceramics Studio
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Nanebevzetí Panny Marie) has been protected as an immovable cultural monument since 25 July 1994. Another specific cultural site is the former school building No. 74: the listed Baroque building houses the Keramické studio Jarmily Tyrnerové, which is still in operation. Kohoutov thus brings together sacred cultural heritage and a former school building with a present-day use. Visitors who want to focus on culture and architecture during their stay will find two distinct points of interest here: the church and a studio in a historic school building.
Lidová řemesla in August
The Lidová řemesla festival in Kohoutov takes place every year on the second Saturday in August. Editions are recorded for 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, with 2025 the most recent listed. If you would like to plan your visit around the festival, check the date of the edition you wish to attend before travelling. So, when planning around the festival, the specific Saturday matters as well as the month.
Cycling Routes and Educational Trail
Municipal planning information dated April 2023 lists three different connections for cyclists. Cycling route 4322 starts in Kohoutov near the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Nanebevzetí Panny Marie) and leaves the municipality in the direction of Hajnice. Route 4097 passes through Kohoutov and connects Choustníkovo Hradiště with Ratibořice; route 4117 also passes through the village and connects Heřmanice with Kocbeře. The distinction is useful when choosing a route: only route 4322 has a stated starting point near the church, while routes 4097 and 4117 are described mainly by the places they connect.
The Naučná stezka hraničních kamenů educational trail offers a different scale. It leads east from Kocbeře to Kohoutov, is less than two kilometres long and covers settlement, Count Špork’s rule, and the forests and sandstone around Kocbeře at its stops. Here, the short distance and specific historical and natural themes are the focus, while the cycling routes connect Kohoutov with other places.
Wetlands and Valley
The wetlands in Kohoutov that have not yet been destroyed by land improvement create an exceptional environment, found in only a few places in the Czech Republic. The Kladrubský potok flows along a natural course through the valley around which Kohoutov is arranged, where higher levels of moisture accumulate. A seasonal observation is also part of the natural landscape: snowdrops begin to bloom in Kohoutov from March onwards. These features highlight different aspects: the wetlands and stream describe the landscape, while March gives a specific reference to the snowdrops’ flowering. Together with the forests and sandstone around Kocbeře covered by the educational trail, they form a nature theme that ranges from the local landscape to the trail’s stops.
