Johannisbad, the spa town of Janské Lázně, combines thermal mineral water with walking and educational trails, as well as seasonal winter sports. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first decide what you would like to focus on: local history and architecture, forest and water, or cross-country skiing. The trails differ not only in theme, but also in route and scale.
Spa town and walking trails
Thermal mineral water emerges at the spa grounds as Janův pramen and Černý pramen. This gives the spa town a specific point of interest for a stay that takes in the spa tradition as well as walks. Comparing two routes shows how varied the trails can be.
The Střední hřeben walking trail is about 5.5 kilometres long and starts in the square by the Art Nouveau colonnade in Janské Lázně. Along the route, there are views of the spa town and Černá hora. Luisina cesta through Těsný (Klausův) důl is slightly shorter, at about 5 kilometres; it also starts in the square by the Art Nouveau colonnade. It passes cascades on Černohorský potok and a waterfall up to 4 metres high. The approximate lengths are similar, but the described experiences offer different highlights: views of the town and mountain on Střední hřeben, and stream cascades and a waterfall on Luisina cesta. Sturdy footwear is recommended for Luisina cesta.
Forest, water and learning
The Krkonoše Treetop Walk offers a different way to explore the forest. The trail is more than 1,500 metres long, passes through a species-rich forest and features a 45-metre-high observation tower. An underground educational centre focuses on tree root systems. This means the same attraction explores both the forest above ground and growth below the surface.
The Lázeňská naučná stezka educational trail combines nature and local history along a named route. It starts at Svobody Square and leads from the Church of St John the Baptist along forest paths over Mariánská výšina and Střední hřeben to Hoffmannova bouda. Several stops provide information about the history of the spa tradition, architecture and natural features. If you like to explore these subjects together as you walk, this trail offers a different perspective from a route whose main highlights are views or waterfalls.
The Staré dobré lázeňské cesty trail network also takes visitors through interesting places in Janské Lázně. It adds walks with a local focus to the named routes.
Cross-country skiing and excursions in the wider area
In winter, the cross-country skiing offer in Janské Lázně includes 90 kilometres of groomed trails, including loops around Černá hora and Světlá hora. The offer is seasonal; snow and grooming conditions may vary. Compared with the walking trails of about 5 and 5.5 kilometres, the stated length of the ski trails offers a different scale for planning. The SkiResort ČERNÁ HORA – PEC area near Janské Lázně is linked to the ski area at Pec pod Sněžkou via the SkiTour. As operations are seasonal, check SkiTour conditions for your travel dates.
Further afield in the region is Černohorské rašeliniště, the largest forest bog in the Giant Mountains. Its educational trail can be reached from Janské Lázně by cable car. Access is seasonally restricted, so check conditions before setting out. The bog extends a stay’s nature focus beyond the trails in the spa town and offers a different experience from the forest sections and waterfalls on the routes described.
