Špindlerův Mlýn offers several distinct reasons to visit: winter sports, walking trails and educational trails, as well as cultural history. If you’re looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether downhill runs and cross-country trails, walks or places of cultural and historical interest should shape your stay. The options vary by season, trail length and theme.
Winter in Špindlerův Mlýn: downhill runs, cross-country trails and sledding
Špindlerův Mlýn’s winter skiing areas include Medvědín, Svatý Petr, Hromovka, Terminál 1 and Horní Mísečky. The ski areas offer groomed downhill runs of varying difficulty for beginners, families, experienced skiers and snowboarders. This lets you choose based on your preferred level of difficulty. The areas available may change; check the latest information if a particular area is important to your plans.
For cross-country skiing, there are groomed trails leading from Špindlerův Mlýn into the surrounding area and up to the ridges of the Krkonoše Mountains. Grooming is seasonal and depends on conditions. If cross-country skiing is a key part of your trip, check the latest trail conditions in advance.
During the winter season, travellers can use the ski bus network to conveniently travel between locations. Routes may change; check the latest connections if they are important to your plans. The toboggan run offers another kind of winter outing: it runs downhill from Spindlerova Bouda to the town. Take the bus uphill and ride downhill on a hired sled. Operating times and sled hire may change seasonally; check the latest information before making plans.
Walking trails with different themes
Mlynářovy Okruhy pass through quiet areas of the town’s natural surroundings, away from busy roads. Designed as walking trails for all age groups, some routes can be adapted. This distinguishes their stated purpose from that of the themed educational trails.
Along the Hornická stezka, information boards explain the historical significance of mining in the area; the trail also passes the ruins of old mine tunnels. The route is 1.4 km long and climbs 100 metres. Čertova strouha is a 1.2 km educational trail featuring an exceptionally well-preserved historic flood-control structure. Čertova strouha has 43 crosswise and 194 lengthwise stone flood-control structures. At 1.2 km, Čertova strouha is shorter than the Hornická stezka. The trail is accessible year-round; weather, maintenance or safety restrictions may affect access.
The NS Labský důl educational trail covers moraines, traces of a huge avalanche and a feature described as the cauldron of the Celtic druids. The easiest way to reach the trail from Špindlerův Mlýn is via a blue-marked hiking trail; conditions may vary. The trails have different focuses: mining history, flood protection and landforms each appeal to different interests.
Harrach's Trail also offers a historical connection to hiking. The section between the White Bridge in Špindlerův Mlýn and the Labská Chalet is the oldest marked tourist route in the Krkonoše Mountains.
Cultural history in town
The Church of St. Peter is a Neoclassical, single-nave building constructed between 1802 and 1807. Services, concerts, talks and personal development programmes are held there; the programme may vary. Those interested in the town’s history will find both architecture and a changing programme of events here.
The Cold War Museum is located in a former nuclear shelter beneath the Hotel Harmony in Špindlerův Mlýn and is open to the public. Visitors can explore the bunker’s original furnishings and rooms independently or on a guided tour. Access and tour options may change; check the latest conditions before your visit.
