A stay in Dolni Kalna can be shaped by very different interests: the landscape of streams and wooded hills, the history of the parish church, or activities on foot, in the water, and on cross-country ski or cycling routes. The village’s features offer several concrete ways to decide which side of the destination will appeal most to you during your trip.

Valley, wooded slopes and paths

Dolni Kalna lies in a picturesque valley crossed by two streams. Wooded hills surround the village, with the highest peak reaching 497 metres above sea level. The valley and the heights together shape the landscape, which you can keep in mind when choosing what to do.

Part of the old Příčnice road in the vicinity of Dolni Kalna can now be explored on foot. In good weather, the path along the Příčnice offers views of the Krkonoše Mountains panorama, the outskirts of the Jizera and Orlické Mountains, and the mountains Bradlo, Zvičina and Staropacké hory. Ještěd near Liberec can also occasionally be seen. The weather is therefore key to the views; Ještěd is not visible every time.

Church and traces of history

The Baroque parish church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary and Saint Wenceslas is a prominent cultural and historical landmark in Dolni Kalna. It was built on the foundations of an earlier Protestant church, first mentioned in the 14th century. The building thus reveals a connection between the Baroque church and the village’s older history.

Jan Amos Comenius is also connected with the church: he preached there before leaving Bohemia for Poland. This historical connection adds a specific person and biographical context to the building’s history. Those interested in religious history will find a distinct point of interest here, alongside the landscape and outdoor activities.

Swimming and activities throughout the year

Dolni Kalna outdoor swimming pool is set in the wooded landscape of the Podkrkonoší region. Its facilities include grassy banks and a concrete pool; it is suitable for swimmers and families with children. There is also a children’s area, courts for volleyball and nohejbal, and lanes suitable for inline skating. Alongside swimming, the grounds therefore offer ball sports and activities on wheels.

For cycling, the 30-kilometre Cyklo okruh Dolní Kalná is a specific option. A regional tourism guide from 2012 describes the route as starting at the local outdoor swimming pool and leading to Rovně. From there, it offers a beautiful view of the Krkonoše Mountains. Check current route conditions locally before setting out; the description of the destination dates from 2012.

Winter has its own appeal, too: tourist cross-country ski trails are groomed in Dolni Kalna. A report dated 7 February 2026 says that volunteers from Dolni Kalna groom trails in the surrounding area when there is enough natural snow, allowing people in the Podkrkonoší region to set off on a cross-country ski trip straight from home. The stated snow condition makes for an easy comparison with the cycling route: current route conditions should be checked before using the 30-kilometre loop, while grooming the trails depends on sufficient natural snow.

In the Krkonoše Mountains, a paragliding school offers instruction at various training levels as well as tandem flights with an instructor. This adds a regional activity to the choices, without limiting your visit to the paths and leisure options in the village.

Dolni Kalna as a base

Dolni Kalna makes a suitable base for visits to the Krkonoše Mountains, the Podkrkonoší region, the Bohemian Paradise and the Zvičínsko area. You can choose the village for its own landscape and history, or as a base for exploring these four regions. Before planning a specific activity, check the relevant conditions to decide what best suits your stay.
