Čermná v Krkonoších stretches along both sides of the Červený potok valley and lies at an average elevation of 450 metres. Numerous traditional log cabins have been preserved in the village; the history of St. Wenceslas Church also spans several building phases. The surrounding area is suitable for excursions in both winter and summer. Together with cycling route 4300, this offers two distinct focal points for your stay: local history and cycling.

Cycling on route 4300

Cycling route 4300 runs through Čermná; the village is at kilometre 6.00 of the route. It is classified as moderate to difficult and runs over asphalt, gravel and paved surfaces. The difficulty rating and surface are specific points to consider when choosing a tour. Before setting out, check the current signage and conditions, especially on exposed or eroded sections.

The Komenského cesta connects to cycling route 4300 and runs through Čermná to Vlčice. This route information describes the connection and the course as far as Vlčice; route 4300 is additionally characterised by a difficulty rating and a variety of surfaces. This allows you to keep the two pieces of information separate when planning, rather than combining them into a single route description.

Local history and St. Wenceslas Church

Čermná was founded in the 13th century, before the start of German colonisation. The first written mention of the village dates from 1362. At that time, Tyček of Ivanovice, the first known owner of the village, farmed here. The date of foundation and the first written mention mark different historical reference points: one concerns the village’s origins, the other its first appearance in writing.

Different periods can also be distinguished in the history of St. Wenceslas Church. The original church was built in 1384 and demolished in 1913. The present-day church was completed in 1915. A Gothic Madonna and Child from the local church, discovered by chance, is dated to the late 14th or early 15th century. The church’s art and architectural history therefore spans different periods.

Other topics in the area’s cultural history include the traditional log cabins. Many have been preserved in Čermná; two groups south of the stream are considered particularly noteworthy. The church and the houses offer different perspectives on local history: the history of a religious building and a work of art on the one hand, and the surviving log cabins on the other.

Events and when to visit

The municipal events programme for 2020 to 2024 listed an Advent concert and other events at the church. Check current dates before travelling. The same programme also listed the fire brigade competition “Memoriál Františka Štočka” as a local tradition. If you would like to plan your trip around an event like this, check the latest schedule in advance.

When looking for a holiday apartment, whether to choose Čermná may depend on whether you would like to focus your stay more on local history or on cycling. The historic sites and the specifically described cycling route offer different points to consider.
