A view from the ridge near Příčnice across the panorama of the Krkonoše Mountains, small monuments and a 22-kilometre cycling loop offer several possible ways to shape a stay in Horní Kalná. Local discoveries also include a swing with a view of Sněžka on a clear day. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Horní Kalná, you can choose your destination based on whether you would like to focus mainly on the scenery, culture or a cycling trip.

Trails, views and nature

The trail over the ridge near Příčnice offers views of the Krkonoše Mountains. Another starting point for nature lovers is the Horní Kalná–kalenský obzor geological site. It is accessible without entry restrictions; by car, you can get to within 250 metres of it. Check local access conditions before your visit.

Horní Kalná is also home to the “Houpačka u kříže mezi lány” swing. It is part of the “Houpačky z hor” project. On a clear day, Sněžka can be seen on the horizon from there. The view of the mountain panorama and the vista from the swing are two distinct ways to plan around the landscape.

Chapels, crosses and local history

Numerous religious monuments have been preserved in Horní Kalná: chapels, wayside shrines, stone crosses, statues of saints and bell towers. There is also a memorial to the victims of the First World War. The monuments come in different forms and feature different motifs; several small ones are also located in the village, which the Prášivka trail descends into.

A glazed statue of the Pietà stands at one wayside shrine. The shrine was built in 1879 at the expense of Jan and Anna Kodym. A statue of Our Lady of the Rosary stands by house number 112 on the road to the summit. Beside the school is a cross dating from 1819, whose depictions of saints have faded. At U Třech svatých stands a statue of Saint Joseph with the Christ Child.

These details offer different ways to explore local history: a Pietà at a wayside shrine, the Madonna on the road to the summit and depictions of saints on the cross beside the school. Those interested in religious monuments will find more than one type of memorial here. The memorial to the victims of the First World War adds another historical dimension to these sacred motifs.

Cycling loop and seasonal activities

The Horní Kalná scenic trail runs for 3 km from the settlement of Příčnice to the forest near Na Lánech and can also be reached from Kunčice nad Labem. The local cycling loop “Z Martinic do Branné a zase zpět” is considerably longer, at 22 km, and passes through Martinice v Krkonoších, Horní Branná, Dolní Branná and Horní Kalná. Comparing the length and route layout helps with choosing: one is a trail between a settlement and a forest, while the other is a loop through several villages. Check local trail conditions before travelling.

In the lower part of Horní Kalná, there is a freely accessible grass field and a paved area. In winter conditions, the paved area can be used for ice skating; this depends on the conditions at the time. Horní Kalná also hosts the “Bronzová kopačka Horní Kalné” nohejbal tournament for a traveling trophy every year. If you would like to plan your stay around the tournament, check the specific event dates.
