In Sedlonov’s town center stands the protected Sedloňovská lípa, an ancient lime tree estimated to be about 500 years old. This tree brings the nature theme right into the heart of the town. At the same time, it extends beyond the town center: part of the municipality lies within the Orlické hory Protected Landscape Area, and several protected sites each have their own distinctive features. From a single protected tree and plant habitats to a floodplain and a valley meadow, the area offers a range of natural attractions. To help you decide where to go, consider two questions: Are you interested in nature, with its plant life and landscapes, or are you looking for a specific hiking destination? The church, monument and fortress also give Sedlonov a historic character.
Natural areas and plant habitats
The Sedloňovský vrch Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of Sedlonov and is freely accessible to visitors, except for fenced areas. Please observe any local restrictions. The spring snowflake grows there in spring. Another botanical site is Ošerov, a protected area where the European globeflower grows. Propadliště is a protected site comprising the floodplain of the Zlatý potok watercourse; Polomské louky is a flower-rich, semi-natural meadow in the valley of the Polomský potok.
The sites differ in character: those particularly interested in plant life will find it at Sedloňovský vrch and in Ošerov. Propadliště and Polomské louky, by contrast, represent two different landscape types: a floodplain and a valley meadow. Sedlonov’s natural attractions thus include both sites with specific botanical features and protected landscape areas.
Hiking trails and a marked destination
Dozens of kilometers of marked hiking trails run through the area around the town; some are also suitable for cycling. One specific hiking destination is Sedloňovský Černý kříž: marked trails lead to the large wooden cross on the ridge. The cross is a specific destination, while the surrounding trail network offers a wider choice of marked routes, some of which are also suitable for cycling.
Church, monument and winter sports history
The Baroque Church of All Saints was completed in 1711 on the site of a wooden church dating from 1578. Together, the church and rectory form a protected cultural monument complex. Both the earlier church and the complex as a whole are important to its history: protection covers not only the church but also the rectory.
Winter sports are also part of the town’s history: the first ski race in the Eagle Mountains was held in Sedlonov in February 1897. A monument at Vrchmezí commemorates earlier visits by Emperor Joseph II, John Quincy Adams and Fryderyk Chopin. The church, ski race and monument thus offer different historical connections, from architectural history to the commemorated visits at Vrchmezí.
Plan your visits
The extensive alpine garden belonging to the Grulich family is in the lower part of Sedlonov, in the V depu area, and can be visited by prior arrangement. Be sure to arrange your visit in advance.
The Skutina artillery fortress is in Polom. Its exhibition covers military fortifications from the interwar period; visitors can descend up to 36 meters into the structure. Check the current opening arrangements before your visit. The planning requirements for these two destinations differ: a prior arrangement is needed for the garden, while you should check the current opening arrangements for Skutina.
