Jaroměř lies at the confluence of the Elbe, Úpa and Metuje rivers. The town offers clearly distinct themes for exploring: a listed department store with a museum, railway exhibitions, a magic museum and the Ptačí park Josefovské louky. If you are considering whether Jaroměř is right for your stay, you can choose your focus based on culture, technology or nature.
A Museum in a Former Department Store
At the Městské muzeum, the building itself is part of the story. The museum is housed in the former Wenke department store, built in 1911; since 2017, the building has been a national cultural monument. A visit to the museum therefore combines exhibitions with a look at a former department store that now houses the museum. Following a reconstruction completed in March 2023, the Městské muzeum offers modern interactive exhibitions. Specific exhibition content may change. If a particular focus is important to you, check the current offerings in advance.
Railway History and Magic
The Železniční muzeum Výtopna Jaroměř has a different focus. Its permanent exhibitions cover locomotive sheds, steam locomotives, electric locomotives, railcars, railway cranes and railway carriages. The range extends from different types of locomotives to other railway vehicles and equipment. The museum is housed in a former locomotive shed for steam locomotives, close to Jaroměř railway station. It is accessible on foot from the station. Check the current opening hours separately if you are planning a visit.
The Muzeum magie offers a different kind of discovery: it displays a collection of magic objects, and visitors can walk through a labyrinth. The collection and labyrinth offer two distinct ways to visit—looking at the objects and walking through the labyrinth yourself. This gives the museum a distinctive focus that complements the historical and technical themes.
Nature Watching near Josefov
Nature and observation are at the heart of the Ptačí park Josefovské louky. Information boards, a nature trail, an observation point and rest areas provide specific places to visit. The park is near the Josefov Fortress by Jaroměř. It is open daily, and admission is free. Seasonal restrictions may apply to paths during the breeding season. Take this possibility into account when planning if you want to use specific paths in the park.
Visits by Appointment or Inquiry
Access to Chrám sv. Mikuláše is also important when planning your visit: the church is open to the public during events such as the Night of Churches and European Heritage Days. Check the event dates before making firm plans to visit. The Záchranná stanice ČSOP in Jaroměř offers excursions on request; you need to contact them in advance. These two activities therefore differ from a visit to the park, which is open daily: for the church, an event date is relevant; for the excursion, you need to make an inquiry.
