The Metuje River runs through Česká Metuje from north to south in a deeply incised valley. The entire municipality lies within the Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area. On the left bank, right next to the built-up area, lies the Pískovcové sloupky Natural Monument. The Vlásenky stream is also part of the local waterways: in Česká Metuje, it is a larger right-bank tributary of the Metuje. These details describe different aspects of the area: the Metuje determines the valley’s north–south direction, while Vlásenky is identified as a tributary. The protected landscape area, meanwhile, covers the entire municipality. The valley’s direction, the relationship between the waterways, and the protected-area designation therefore describe different geographic dimensions.

Pískovcové sloupky: Geology and Consideration

Pískovcové sloupky is a remarkable geological formation. It was formed by karstification and selective weathering in carbonate-rich Upper Cretaceous sediments. It includes hourglass-shaped, sandstone-like rock pillars on the wall of an artificial exposure. The same natural area also includes a geomorphologically remarkable scree slope with rock outcrops, as well as communities of near-natural forests and rocks. Geology and ecology offer different perspectives: the pillars, scree slope, and outcrops describe landforms and terrain, while the communities of near-natural forests and rocks add an ecological perspective. Sporting or recreational use of Pískovcové sloupky is not encouraged because the sandstone pillars are fragile.

Local Landmarks

Two other named points help with local orientation. Berkova lípa stands south of Pískovcové sloupky, beyond house No. 21; it is a protected commemorative tree. The atonement cross “Smírčí kříž” stands on the left side of the road to Police. It is a Greek cross with an inscription; on its reverse is a depiction of a person fleeing from an axe. The location details use different reference points: for the linden, the cardinal direction and house number matter, while for the cross, it is the side of the road and the direction towards Police. The descriptions also emphasize different aspects: for the commemorative tree, the protected designation and location are foregrounded; for the cross, its shape, inscription, and depiction on the reverse.

Name and History

The place name also leads back to the river: the settlement took its name from the Metuje. The first surviving written mention of the village of Metuje dates from 1406; at the time, it was named as part of the Police estate. The origin of the name and the historical written record are different kinds of evidence: the river explains the name, while the date establishes when the surviving mention was made.

Travel by Train

A railway line runs through Česká Metuje from Meziměstí towards Týniště nad Orlicí and Choceň. The route through the municipality describes the infrastructure, while the place names indicate its direction. This information alone is not enough to plan an actual journey: check the timetable for the appropriate connection on your travel date when planning your arrival or onward journey.
