Church of All Saints: Building History and Art
The present Church of All Saints (Kostel Všech svatých) was built between 1722 and 1726 on the site of a wooden church dating from the 14th century. Together with its grounds, it is a national cultural monument and a significant Baroque building in the Broumovsko region. As a landmark of Heřmánkovice and the surrounding landscape, it is also a striking example of the High Baroque and Empire styles.
The elongated octagonal floor plan, the prismatic tower with rounded corners, the narrow presbytery, and the sacristy define the architecture. Inside, the ceiling painting depicts a view of heaven, alongside representations of the four Evangelists and angels in elliptical wreaths. The ceiling painting was created in 1736 by the Broumov painter Johann Hausdorf, after the church was built between 1722 and 1726. This makes it possible to distinguish the dates of the building and its decoration: the present church was built in the 18th century, and the painting followed later.
In front of the church is a Calvary group dating from around 1800. There are also two reconciliation crosses by the cemetery wall in Heřmánkovice.
Church visits planned for August 2026 as part of the Open Churches program were canceled because reconstruction was announced to begin on August 1, 2026. Access may vary during restoration, so check whether visits are possible in advance.
