If you enjoy exploring cultural history through specific places and objects, Černčice offers several distinct points of interest. Gothic architecture, a Renaissance building, fortification remains and archaeological traces give the town a clear cultural and historical focus. Černčice lies in the foothills of the Orlické hory at an elevation of around 300 metres above sea level. Good rail and bus connections serve the surrounding area; check the options for your travel dates.
Church, Cemetery and Tower
The Church of sv. Jakuba is located in the western part of Černčice and was built in the Gothic style. Inside the church is a pewter baptismal font on a tripod dating from 1585. The church cemetery, which is completely enclosed, can be reached via the open space in front of the Černčická věž. The Černčická věž was built in 1613 in the Renaissance style, is 25 metres high and has five above-ground storeys. It also features a newly constructed viewing walkway. The church and tower can be identified by different features: the church by its architectural style and furnishing, and the tower by its construction date, Renaissance style and dimensions. If you plan to include the viewing walkway in your visit, check in advance whether it is accessible.
The Former Černčická tvrz
The overgrown remains of the Černčická tvrz lie north of the church on elevated ground. The site of the former fortress and its surroundings are protected as a historic monument. The first written mention of the tvrz dates from 1405. The protected site and a precise historical date thus both contribute to the history of the town.
Archaeological Traces
Černčice’s prehistory is also associated with specific finds. Surface surveys uncovered more than 70 artefacts attributed to the Gravettian. This assemblage is the largest Gravettian assemblage in Eastern Bohemia. The presence of the earliest farmers in the Neolithic period is documented for the years 5500 to 4200 BC. The two archaeological topics offer different points of emphasis: the Gravettian assemblage stands out for its size and regional significance, while the evidence of the farmers’ presence is distinguished by a clearly defined period. Together with the dates 1405, 1585 and 1613, these findings extend the picture from prehistoric contexts to precisely dated historical reference points.
Plan Your Stay
When choosing a place to stay, it helps to distinguish between the different themes: visitors primarily interested in architecture can focus on the church and tower, while those looking to explore earlier periods can make the prehistoric finds a focus of their visit. This makes it easier to match Černčice to your interests before you look for a holiday apartment. Its location in the foothills of the Orlické hory adds a landscape dimension to the cultural focus.
