Vysokov combines memorial sites commemorating the Battle of 1866 with a chapel, a nature area and routes through the village. In good weather, views of the mountain panoramas of the Krkonoše and Orlické Mountains add to the experience. This offers several ways to focus your stay: you can explore the village’s history, take in the landscape, or include an educational trail or cycling route in your plans.
Monuments and Local History
The “Myslivec” monument commemorates the Czech soldiers of the sixth battalion of the field jägers who fell in the 1866 war. Erected in 1906, this sandstone monument provides a specific point of military-historical interest. Another 1866 cavalry monument in Vysokov offers a different focus: the 13-metre-high granite pillar is topped by a reclining lion made of white marble.
The “Jehlanec jízdy” war memorial stands at the highest point of the battlefield. It was erected on the 35th anniversary of the Battle of Náchod and commemorates the cavalry battle between Austrian and Prussian troops. The monuments differ in material, form and the occasion they commemorate: “Myslivec” refers to soldiers from a specific battalion who fell, while “Jehlanec jízdy” refers to the battle and its cavalry. Together, they provide several specific points of reference for the history of 1866.
The Božského srdce Páně Chapel is also part of the village’s history. It was built in 1936 on the site of a smithy that had burned down, and is located near the “Vysokov, most” bus stop. Another cultural attraction is “Vysokovský kohout”, a national amateur film festival with international participation. It takes place at the U Kohouta restaurant in Vysokov.
Landscape and Seasons
The Biocentrum v Luhách showcases another side of the surrounding area. It includes grassy slopes bordered by various patches of woodland. Pines, birches, oaks and spruces grow there, along with old beech trees. The slopes and variety of trees give the biocentre its distinctive landscape character; visiting does not depend on a single viewpoint or a specific route.
To reach the biocentre, take the road from Vysokov to Starkoč and turn right under the railway bridge on the Starkoč–Václavice line. The views of the mountain panoramas are also subject to a condition: they can be enjoyed in good weather. In winter, cross-country skiing is possible in Vysokov when snow conditions are good. This means that weather-dependent views and a snow-dependent winter activity are additional to the historical sites, which offer a different focus for a visit.
Educational Trail, Cycling Route and Railway Lines
The “NÁCHOD – VYSOKOV – VÁCLAVICE 1866” educational trail runs from Náchod State Chateau to Václavice railway station, passing through Vysokov. The marked KČT cycling route 4056, “Po stopách bojů 1866”, is different: a municipal description from 2021 places its route through Vysokov; the route is 26 kilometres long. For your plans, both the named endpoints of the educational trail and the length of the cycling route provide specific points of reference.
The railway is also part of the village’s history. The line from Jaroměř to Trutnov was built from 1859 to 1869, and the Choceň–Meziměstí line from 1872 to 1875; both run through Vysokov. Their different construction periods and routes add another perspective on the development of the village alongside the historical monuments.
